Morning

I gave up smoking after 38 years, I never thought I could do it.

Take every day minute by minute, when you feel the urge get up and do something or get something to nibble on carrots, mints and drink plenty of water. I started doing gentle exercise, make sure you warm up first. Its filling the time and keeping your mind off the fags, but it can be done. I gave up 5 years ago this December.

Good luck

Kim xx

That devil will keep trying to tempt you back, but you've gone 4 weeks so its will power. Have you tried a hobby, I do family history I get lost in that for hours. Its the hardest thing to stop I know that. Keep giving us an update every day, so we can keep supporting you, most of us have had to do it.

Many congratulations. Have you tried another site on here healthunlocked.com/quitsupp... for extra help? It can take a while to feel the benefits but you will.

They say that a craving for a cigarette lasts 7 minutes so i would use that time to do deep breathing or something to take my mind off it and it helped a lot

Hi Peterkwik, I see you have had good advice already. Why not join one of the Healthunlocked no smoking sites. I am an administrator on the Quit support community and we have a lot of members there who have managed to quit. Lots of information and tips too. :) xx

Agghhh!!! Don't do it! Remember how bad you felt? You don't want to feel like that all the time. You've done the hardest bit - the first 2 weeks. Just keep looking forward now xpiggix

Good morning peterkwik, and welcome to the site.

Be strong - four weeks is really good. Your lungs are clearing. If you are doing it without help then I admire you. I had Zyban capsules, followed instructions to the letter, and they worked brilliantly. That was after 50 years of being a heavy smoker. Keep going whatever you do, get up and do something to keep your hands occupied. Think of the freedom of not having to hunt for cigarettes and lighter every time you go anywhere. I wish you all the best.

I gave up about 7 years ago. I can't stand the smell of them now - not even on people's clothing. So, and this is meant in a nice way, my suggestion is to remind yourself of the people you could potentially offend by smoking near them and even the general smell on you when in a queue at the shops or wherever.

And the many health benefits you stand to gain or lose.

What a lot of good advice you've already been given, Peterkwik. When I quit in 1985, I conditioned my thoughts to imagine myself baulking as if I was going to vomit, each time I craved a cigarette. Then I got busy with something else. It helped, as I'm still stopped.

Hi peterkwik . I wanted to say hello and welcome. I am sorry I can't help with the issue you need help with but well done! Giving up smoking is a wonderful achievement indeed. Hang in there.

...What I have never understood is why, when you stop smoking , all the trouble starts - when I smoked , I was never out of breath, and no problems with mucus either, , in fact in those days , I never even knew what mucus was ! - having stopped - NOW I DO - ON BOTH FRONTS - this has to be the most " UNFAIR" illness of the lot ( COPD ) ...stop smoking , and the " Punishment " begins, but when heavy drinkers stop their excesses, apparently the damaged LIVER CAN RENEW ITSELF , whilst our lungs are permanently damaged ...a pal of mine who only smoked a couple of ciggies a day , but easily took part in the Annual MARATHON RACE , on taking advice, he gave up those few ciggies - NOW HE CAN HARDLY WALK TO THE TOILET ....when he suggests to his pals that still smoke that they should give up, , they say - " WELL LOOK AT THE STATE OF YOU NOW, HAVING GIVEN THEM UP " ! - it seems you can't win with this disease ....FUNNY OLD LIFE AINT IT ! ...
