Hard to know what to think Six as you don't give much information - assume, when you say "he" that you mean the doctor told you to reduce the pred. You don't say how long you've been on it, or what condition you've got. If you are tapering and it's not going well you should get back in touch with the GP for advice. Halving your dose may have been too extreme and you might need to reduce by, say, 5mg. People often get some kind of a kick-back when they reduce and if you feel much more breathless on 10mg that might suggest tapering more slowly and gently, or even that it's too early to start reducing - Im not your GP so have no idea :) It really sounds like you need more advice and information to understand so please make an appointment.

I have a GP appointment on Tuesday to discuss reducing the amount I take over a longer period as suggested by a respiratory nurse. I started a new batch last week and taken 4 per day (20mg) instead of 30 mg. (6) seem to be suiting me , not disturbing my sleep as much.

Prendison in my opinion worst thing you can take. Have Broncitis so many times and they put me onto this. 1 week 2x 5mg 3 times a day then 2x 2 times then 1 per day. Pretty long term. It has weakend my whole system. Hard to sleep, sweating, swollen feet/legs eat a lot. Have now stopped it completely on my own decision and am starting to feel much better in my body.

Read up on it, Mayo Clinic USA will really frighten you. It is the type of Steroids.

Other stuff you can get.

Six1 Please take advice from your doctor re. dose and tapering reduction.

Oral steroids are powerful and a great help with certain health conditions as most of us know!

However, they can also bring a load of trouble with long term use!

Such as long term dependency, cataracts, glaucoma, bone loss, loss of muscle tone, loss of bone, diabetes, and more. Rapid reductions can cause psychosis.

Please don't fiddle/meddle with the dose without medical supervision.

Have a great day.

Hi Polly. Yes should always talk to you Doc but a lot of Doctots take what the Pharmas say.

Last time I was back in New Zealand in Jan/Feb this year. My doc did blood test and very concerned my blood sugar high. But he never said one time about the courses of Prednisolone he had me on. Why! Why. When all the evidence is factual on the Net.

I have. Cut down slowlly now. My blood readings with my test meter been showing 15- 22 many times. Since cutting down it is showing from 5.4- 7.5 many times and I do not feel so tired and am sleeping better.

My legs are getting stronger. In the hospital in Thailand the doctor told me straight my high blood sugari was caused by the Prednisolone

I found it very educational. Going onto Google "Prednisolone" So many top known Hospitals and Doctiors all over the world, giving you the down to earth facts.

Hi Shaurene,

I do agree that it is really helpful if we understand about our condition and the medication we need to take to keep us well.

Steroids-Prednisolone is a powerful medication as you know, it has the power to help us get well and it has the power to cause other issues too.

I became steroid dependant this year and yes I too developed steroid induced diabetes....what a pain!! Reducing 1mg a week and now down to 3 mg, blood sugar levels are going down, but wether it will be possible for blood sugar levels to go back to healthy levels I don't yet know.

I take calcium supplement to protect my bones and have had to see the Oral Maxillofacial docs for the terrible candida in my mouth. So more problems from the steroids than from my lungs!

Longing to be finished with the flipping things!

Keep well and happy!

Hi Six1,

Please discuss this with your doctor, Preds can be very helpful in cutting out inflammation so you will feel you can breath easier but you have to weigh out the consequences of regularly taking a higher dose by what problems they can cause in the long term. I agree with PollyP & 02trees be guided by your doctor. I have been on a maintenance regime of 10mg a day for nine months now and it has helped me function better but at a cost my consultant was very clear what could happen in the long term.

Cheers,

Sue

It sounds to me like the steroids have caused adrenal gland fatigue. This happened to me. The glands become dependent on the steroid so stop working but don't start again when you reduce the steroids, so have to. go back on them. You need to get a short synathacen test done to see what your adrenal glands are doing. I have to have them permanently because of this, but now have diabetes because of them.

I find cutting out sugar in my case as helped an awful lot, especially as I also get depression because of my broncicatasis and the dreaded steroid weight gain. I like sugarnono UK.co.UK, for this, they have free sugar free recipes, and treats. etc.

Please get your doc yo check your adrenal glands its more common than you think, its only 2 blood tests and an injection good luck.
