My lung function test results:-

FEV1 predicted= 2.31 best=1.50 65% predicted

FEV6 predicted = 2.72 best=1.74. 64% predicted

FEV 1/FEV 6 RATIO predicted 0.80 best 0.86 ratio 108% predicted.

Can anyone make sense of this for me please? Xx

Well FEV1 is your lung function so I think you are at 65% which puts you in the moderate stage. This is not 65% of 100% though it is based on the average for your age, weight, sex etc. x

Thank you that's helpful. I'm going to go to the GP with the private test results and see if I need to change my medication or anything.

I read it swerv... It was helpful except my lung function tester only did the FEV readings and not the FVC. Anyway I read further down on your link and it showed about the GOLD classification it says in my result that I'm normal on that. On the obstructive index it says mild I presume it means mild COPD. The only other thing my results say is your lung age is above normal. Is that good or bad?

Thanks

I tend to concentrate on my FEV% which is a good indicator of your condition. An FEV of 65% indicates moderate which is gold/stage2.

If your lung age is above normal my understanding is that for example: you are 65 years old but you have the lungs of an 85 year old meaning your lung age is above normal.

One thing you will find is that whilst Google is an excellent forum for information it can also put people into a panic as some of the information is out of date.

There are a number of things you can do to slow the progress and improve your condition. Exercise and healthy eating is very important and if you are smoking STOP.

I was diagnosed stage 2 in March 2016, gave up smoking 12 days later and could only walk about 100 yards before i was breathless. My FEV at the time was 69%. I started eating healthier, started exercising more and also started taking cannabis oil...you can search for my previous posts about this amazing weed.

I stopped taking any medication other than cannabis oil on the 24th december 2015.

In May this year my FEV was 78% and i regularly cycle 7-10kms, swim, walk, yoga etc. My blood pressure has come down from 154 to 125 and my sats early 90's to 98.

If you want to know more about your condition others will be along to give advice also search for groups on facebook which deal with this subject

Good luck and don't hesitate to ask questions on here there are some very knowledgeable members in HU.

In addition to my last post it is recommended that you have an annual flu shot plus pneumonia if you can get it as you need to minimise your risk to infection as a chest infection can/will weaken your lungs. Avoid sick people, if you travel abroad do like me...i arrived in the UK recently to visit my family and i put a face mask on when i entered my departure airport and only took it off in immigration and when i arrived in the UK. When i know there is flu around i will wear a mask in my local supermarkets.

As mentioned previously a healthy diet is required, lots of fruit....berries, apples, oranges, bananas, pineapple etc, vegetables...kale, spinach, carrots, beetroot...best juiced.

Multivitamins plus extra vitamin D.

Cut out or reduce the amount of processed food you eat.

Cut out salt and sugar.

You can PM me if you need more info on diet or just google it.

Thanks John

Yes helpful info thank you. Hope you're feeling better. I'm doing the whole healthy living for rather a long time now. It's not working the Dr said and he had said I'm depressed and treating my u deractive thyroid is the most important thing. They don't seem to care that the weight gain is depressing me. I'm a beauty therapist and fat is not good for my image and more importantly my health. Slow metabolism sucks.

Thanks Merv great you've seen improvement t hopefully getting even better scores as you go on with your lifestyle improvements. I've just been put on antidepressants. So rather glum at moment especially reading the expected side effects. (Citalopram) Sigh.

Some places will use the FEV6 as a more accurate representation than the FVC.

Have already you been diagnosed with COPD? If not, your results are normal. You just have smaller than average lungs. What symptoms do you have?

Are those results are from piko meter, or a technician supervised lung function test?

Even best results often aren't conclusive, but need to be coached from you by an experienced technician.

The consultant said I could have a mixture of allergic asthma and COPD she said it's hard to know. I think I prefer that it's just having smaller lungs. Thanks for posting. I remember being told I have small lungs before.

I'm finding mindfulness and meditation helps with breathing issues and would recommend to people having breathing difficulties because of stress .

I have exacerberations of severe flu every November usually with hospital admission and short course of prednisolone. I have trouble swallowing, a hoarse and deep voice, quite regularly bring up bile and feel panicky and claustrophobic in small spaces like cars, sma rooms with doors closed. I sound mad haha.
