Hi

I would stay away, you could get shingles. I am uncertain how long he will be contagious, check on the NHS site.

I hope he makes a speedy recovery

Actually, medical advice is you can't get shingles from someone with chickenpox. It's the other way round, you CAN catch chickenpox from someone with shingles, but only if you haven't had chickenpox before. BUT having said that I agree with velvet, I just wouldn't take the risk, especially if you're on steroids. It sounds like your immunity could be low anyway, with your kidney problem. If you go and see him, you'll only worry about it, so I'd wait until the spots have scabbed over.

thank you i feel obliged to go and help out but don't want to put myself at risk either,a bit of a dilemma

in reply to B0xermad

I really wouldn't, and I'm sure your son/daughter wouldn't want you to risk it. If you don't mind me saying, you don't sound well enough yourself to be nursing a sick child.

Thank you and It sounds sensible advice but my daughter is poorly and i was going to help her out just unsure if I am at too great a risk to go.

in reply to B0xermad

Oh dear, sorry to hear about your daughter. I understand how you feel but it won't help if you get ill. Isn't there anyone else who can help her?

Hi BOxermad, it's not a good idea and should not go near anyone with chicken pox until spots have all scabbed over.

Take care. Xxxx

I had chicken pox as a child. Didn't stop me catching a Varicella infection, a variation of chicken pox.

I would not visit but stay away. You don't want to compromise your own health. Also, if you are on steroids you have to let your Dr know if you come into contact with chicken pox. X

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

You can get shingles if you have had chicken pox as a child

I did catch chickenpox twice as a child, so I wouldn't take the risk.

You won't be much help if you go down with something yourself so why not give it a miss this time? Or you could always give your own doctor a call and ask for advice. If they agree it's ok, then do it, but personally, I wouldn't.

I still feel a lot of guilt about leaving my family to it when they had norovirus and two little kids in the house, but I'd just had a GI bleed and couldn't afford to have another bout of sickness so we shopped and left the bags at the door for them. It felt terrible and I hate thinking about it now, but I also knew the situation would be even worse if I succumbed to the bug.

Hard choices have to be made sometimes, but you MUST look after yourself!

I would not go near , if you have had chicken pox and could get shingles and trust me when I tell you it hurts so bad . I had them when I was in my twenties , my hub had to work from home as we had little ones and I was so unwell . Can you face time them ? If you want to keep

In touch with them whilst they are poorly. I ended up in hospital and I was only young . Hope they better soon , my three had it one Christmas , one after the other . It was the quitest Christmas we ever had , but they all looked so I'll . 😇

I had chicken pox as a child when I was on the bank I did a few nights on the children's ward one had chicken pox I ended up with shingles very painful

I wouldn't leave anything to chance although I am pretty sure you would be ok. You just never know.

Poor lad, but at least it won't last for long once the scabs form. What a shame it has happened during the school holidays! Bad planning by your Grandson.

All I know is that:

I had chicken poxs as a child. When I was pregnant with my third child, my two daughters came down with chicken poxs and I came down with a mild case of shingles.

The chicken pox virus stays in your system for life. When you have a weaken immune system, the virus can flair up as shingles. That's why a lot of older people get shingles. Here in the states it is recommended that older people get a shot (jab) to prevent shingles.
