Hi Maryann73 try and stay strong and positive I know it's hard to hear that you have a disease/illness. I was 41 when I was told I have lung disease it takes awhile to accept and understand it. Try not to think about it, try and carry on with your life as normal as possible, yes your life will be much slower and you might not be able to do the things your used too or want to but the way I see it is at least we're still here, we can still smile and joke and spend time with our loved ones. We are much luckier than some. 2 months before I became ill I lost my dearest friend who also was only 41 she had a massive heart attack and left 5 children the youngest was only 4. I now have custody of her. Don't give up your still you, live life to the max and enjoy yourself while your still able.. Good luck.

Hello Maryann and welcome. It's a scary thing but a lot of it is fear of the unknown, and it sounds as though you've been told you have a lung problem but not too much about what this means and what can be done to help.

You're quite young so I'm guessing it's mild and there's a lot you can do to keep it that way. Can you tell us a little bit more when you're ready? Meanwhile, take care of yourself. Sue x

We have all felt the same with our own diagnosis .. You would have to be mad if it never bothered you.

Being stressed is not going to help your breathing LOTs of people well the say tall slim have bulbous in the lungs the don't even know about.

When I was told I have bulbous and emphysema I thought was end of world and my lungs was going to pop explode BUT the never and few years later I was told at last scan it as not advanced AND that did surprise me as I still smoke

Like others have said even tho emphysema diagnosis is grim it's by no means the end of the world.

Hello Maryann,

Please do not start worrying, you'll get stuck in a trap of negativity. This is the perfect place to come for advice from people who have just what you have, and worse. I've got mod copd and I am not afraid, and I am certainly not going anywhere near the end of any road! You are young and I think you are imagining this is the end of everything - well it is not. There is such a lot you can do to help yourself, and you have a good life ahead of you. Look after your diet and exercise, if you can get on a pulmonary rehabilitation course soon as possible, you will learn all about what you have, and how to manage it. You have certainly landed in the right place for help, advice and such kind people who will give you their time and expertise just for the asking. The future is positive:-)

Hello Alicat,

What good news about your Daughter. I hope her future is very bright - and then yours will be too. My daughter had awful bronchial asthma for10 years and suddenly it went when she was 14. So I appreciate a little of how it is and has been for you.

:-)

Thank you, now to sort whats wrong with my lungs. Snap crackle and an infection it feels strange going through tests she had. Hospital appointment next week. Trust me to get an infection where only one typw of antibotics work:$ and on top of a pre existing condition.

Hey - as long as one works who cares....it works for you. I wish you all the very best with your hospital visit, and yes it must feel strange. I really hope you are feeling much better in yourself by the time of your appointment. Let us know how you get on?

Hi Maryann, what you are feeling is the normal reaction to being told you have a disease.

We all went through it. I wasted 18 months, worrying, not eating and putting off stopping smoking, because I got severely depressed about the diagnosis. Please don't do the same. You'll just make yourself poorly, for no good reason, like I did.

You will soon learn on here, that it isn't the end of your life, because it isn't.

If you read a very recent post, you will find a man that has had it for 28 years and lives a very good life.

The medical profession are finally throwing everything at lung disease and there are some brilliant new and upcoming treatments being trialled everyday.

Any worries, post them on here.

There are some very knowledgeable people on here and you'll learn much more about copd, than you will off your Docter.

Try and calm down and start looking after yourself xx
