Hi

Some light reading, I am on Ambulitory oxygen therapy for exercise and walking.

Quote

Short burst oxygen therapy

refers to the intermittent use of supplemental oxygen at home usually for periods of about 10 to 20 minutes at a time to relieve dyspnoea

it is important to differentiate short burst therapy from the provision of continuous oxygen with exercise and termed ambulatory oxygen therapy

short burst oxygen therapy has traditionally been used for:

pre-oxygenation before exercise

breathlessness during recovery from exercise

control of breathlessness at rest

used in palliative care

used after an exacerbation of COPD to bridge the time to full LTOT assessment

short burst oxygen should be considered for episodic breathlessness, not relieved by other treatments in patients with the following conditions:

severe COPD

interstitial lung disease

heart failure

palliative care

short burst oxygen should only be prescribed if an improvement in breathlessness and/or exercise tolerance can be documented (1)

assessment for short burst oxygen therapy

no specific methodology has been developed for assessment of short burst therapy

other causes of breathlessness must be excluded and patients should be assessed for LTOT if appropriate

By bobbyfloyd, I use oxygen as and when needed but not because I am feeling annoyed, upset or irritated (exasperation). I tend to use it when my condition worsens and I am short of breathe (exacerbation).

On second thoughts though, I was annoyed once and remember getting short of breathe so I most probably had a few puffs of my oxygen. Lol

Hope you don't take offence, the two words are easy to get mixed up.

Is there anything in particular you wanted to know as I'm sure there are loads of people on this site using oxygen that would be willing to help.

Regards John

I doubt Bobby has mixed them up John, this often happens through predictive text - easy not to notice it when you're carrying on typing.

I don't have oxygen at home but when I have an exacerbation bad enough to land me in hospital, I always get oxygen as well as IV meds, to help me with breathlessness. Usually, I'll use it a lot for the first 48 hours but after that it will be to help get over breathlessness after exercise or sometimes, just for a boost when I'm particularly tired.By the time I go home, I've stopped using it completely but I find it a huge help in getting over severe infections. I don't think it's unusual to be given oxygen for short periods and if your medical team recommend it then it shouldn't be a problem.

When ever I am in hospital I am usually put on it but my GP Practice will not do it?

It might be a good idea to make an appointment to see your respitory consultant and discuss this with him,  \if he recommends o2 he will prescribe it and notify your GP who will then prescribe it to you.  good luck

I am trying but is a long story? But so far my 3 dates have been cancelled still waiting for the new one.  Probably have to call again to get them moving!
