gastro esophageal reflux disease. Where acid from the stomach leaks up into the esophagus. This can damage the esophagus itself. More importantly for us it is very common in people with lung conditions. The acid can splash over into the lungs and further damage them. This is why many people on here take some sort of acid suppressing drug. I take lanzaprazole. I hope that helps.
I am a sufferer of GERD/GORD as stilstanding says it is stomach acid coming back up the esophagus and giving burning (heartburn) sensations, I kept losing my voice which was due to the acid burning my vocal chords.
I was on many ant acid medications and I had a 'laprascopic nissan fundoplication' where the top of my stomach was wrapped around the bottom of my esophagus to use the stomach muscles to close the lower sphincter at the bottom of the esophagus. This means I have to avoid any gassy drinks (beers, lagers, coke, lemonade etc.) as well as spicy foods or foods that would give you gas as this is unable to escape upwards. It also means I am unable to vomit, so I have to be careful that I don't eat anything to make me sick. I still have to raise the head of my bed so I am not laying flat.

What doctors don't tell you if you have lung diseases and suffer lung hyperinflation your chest ribcage expands "anyone with lung disease who cares to looks in mirror" will see ribs with a crust on them .. That's rib STREES of hyperinflation on rib cage.
That process causes little pocket "free space " next to stomach that your intestines fill THATs what pain is BUT your intestines push up next to your stomach and just like you squash a ballon it forces contents up and that's gerd reflux IBS
Doctors try to protect us from true horrors BUT when you have other agencies painting picture of everything fine it's not on really.

Rib fractures not related to trauma. Several more re- cent case reports describe rib stress fractures related to coughing due to infections.
A stress fracture can be defined as a partial or complete bone fracture that results from repeated application of stress lower than the stress required in order to frac- ture the bone in a single loading” .
Bone stress can be defined as the load or force applied per unit area and re- sults in bone deformation known as bone strain.
According to the above definitions stress fractures are developed over time when the natural process of bone remodeling is unable to compensate for (repair) the accumulating microdamage caused by a combination of the repetitiveness of the bone strain, the strain rate, the strain magnitude and the limited periods of recovery allowed between exposure to the bone strain.
Consequently, stress fractures develop along a continuum starting with asymptomatic accelerated re- modeling of bone. As osteoblastic bone formation is always preceded by osteo- clastic bone resorption and an entire cycle of bone remodeling can take up to 4 months including a period of weakened bone during the resorption and reversal phases, accelerated remodeling may lead to further accumulation of microdam- age if the bone stress is continued.
Further accumulation of microdamage may progress into a stress reaction causing mild pain.
I dont understand about looking in a mirror and seeing rib crust
Av forgot name of it but if you breath in looking in mirror you can see bone formation on your ribs from STREES fracture.
Ever had doctor press your sternum WELL if the have and it hurts .. Your suffering stress fractures

Good question, answers a lot of mine. I stopped taking my Lanzoprazol when my tumour came back but doctor advised Tuesday to carry on as it is beneficial and reading other posts realise it is.

Ive had acid reflux for over twenty years long before i was diagnosed with copd . I couldnt cope with it if it wasnt for the lanzaprazole

You'll probably find you have it yourself Christine. Many of us do, probably not unrelated to the fact that our stomachs etc., are so irritated and inflamed from constant medications such as antibiotics and steroids.
My husband as what is called LPR which is the silent reflux it collects in his throat and gurgles all day long. He as a hiatus hernia which allows bile and reflux to come into the throat.At the moment he takes Lanzoprodol Ratinidine and domperidine none of these work.Will not operate on the hernia with him having copd.
