Sore Dry Blocked nose

Just been advised by Respiratory Nurse Practitioner to use Vaseline to ease dry blocked sore nose. l am on 24/7 oxygen using nose cannula's. I thought you shouldn't use petroleum based products if on oxygen? Advise please.

I agree with Newlands oil based products are a none starter with oxygen.

Surprised at Respitory Nurse advice.

K-Y fell is suitable or ask your Pharmacy for any non oil based product.

GUESS IT DOSENT MATTER. I AGREE NO VASELINE. I HAVE A COUPLE OVER THE COUNTER MEDS THAT R GREAT. NASAL SPRAY WITH ALOE AND AYR SALINE NASAL GEL WITH ALOE VERA. WORK GREAT!!!!!

I agree, stay away from anything oil based, like Vaseline. Your nurse must have been having an off day. Thank goodness you knew better. x

Your nurse needs educating.....Never use Vaseline or any other petroleum based product. I use Sterimar saline nasal spray I find this helps or you can use KY jelly. Please show your nurse the guidance given to oxygen users & direct her to the NHS choices web site Oxygen pages.. The nurse should undertake further training.

The more I read and hear about bad advice given by the medical profession the more anxious I get - seems we have to double check everything for ourselves. Members of this Group are so very helpful - seems to me that we are on our own. I will always double check for advice by coming here.

NO, just NO. Do not use any petroleum based product if you are on oxygen. You could end up with a very badly burnt nose. Your respiratory nurse practitioner should know better but obviously doesn't. Educate her, she needs to learn and you might save someone else from serious injury.

In hospital it's highly unlikely there'd be any naked flames or cigarettes near the oxygen, at home less unlikely . . .

yes i have read and been told the same including by the fire service who came out to check out my home as i am on 24/7 high use (15) oxygen. my Resp. nurse also said NOT to use vaseline!!!

No you should not use petroleum products. My husband had prescription petroleum cream prescribed for chronic leg excema but stopped using it when I went on home oxygen having read warnings about the dangers. Please use aqua based cream, KY jelly is one that works. Joyce

I bought some from the hospital trolley that came to the ward on the advice of a nurse but only used it one before finding out about the danger. I use a lubricating gel that I buy from Poundland , does the job.

I was told that too (I'm on oxygen therapy) they were most emphatic about it! Everyone from the Respiratory nurse in the hospital to the people who supplied my oxygen, I would clarify this just to be sure....take care.

No petroleum at all. But my daughter found me Burt’s Bees Baby multipurpose ointment. It’s petroleum free, nice fragrance and has healed my nose nicely. I love this stuff and use it for all sorts of things. Mine comes in a jar kind of like Vaseline.
