Hemoglobin iron count.

Hi

For the past 3 years I have been seeing a blood specialist every 3 months, back in 2012 my iron and hemoglobin was that low I had a blood transfusion, ever since my hemoglobin count is up and down like a yo yo, I'm on iron and vitamin c tablets, 1 per day, they are at a loss to what's causing this.

I have had cameras inside every where, not nice, ive had swabs taken from inside also, still not nice. Ct scan all, All came back fine.

The specialists ain't got a clue, looks like I'm in next week for a top up transfusion.

Your task is my dear friends, why does my hemoglobin count keep going up and down?

Good luck.

I did ask if it's got anything to do with my bullous emphysema, she said no they have looked into that as well

Hi David, I have had blood in my urine for years now, I have had scans, CT scan with contrast, X-rays and a camera inspection, but no reason could be found.

I googled ...I know you are not supposed too, but I found out it can be a side effect of one of my medications.

Has your urine been checked at all...I don't think it has made me anaemic though....just a thought.

I hope you find an answer...take care.

Strange, it works for me.

I'm using my iPhone, maybe that's the reason. Both links just take me to a log in page for medscape.

I'd copy the article but it's a long one and, looking at it again, may not be relevant as it's based on studies of dialysis patients.

Hi 1968

This is a subject dear to my heart. For over 25 years, my HB has peaked and troughed with manic energy from week to week, month to month. I have been as low as 5.5 (or 55) and rarely limp higher than 10.2 (102). I take between 1 & 3 iron tablets daily, gave had so many transfusions that I now refuse them in case I need more when I am older. Iron infusions are brilliant but I am allergic to parenteral iron now so have to rely on the tablets.

I have Lupus but no features to suggest that my body is destroying my red blood cells. It is a perpetual mystery but it no longer bothers me. I'm a vegetarian which doesn't help but otherwise pretty healthy. My Lupus flares when my iron intake is high and I feel there must be a link somewhere to this and my anemia but I don't know what it is. My white blood cell count is also low so my docs just say 'normal for me'.

Iron infusions are worth considering, particularly the new ones like Ferinject. I'm not sure that I've helped you at all other than to say that you are not alone. Feel free to ask or PM me if there's anything I can advise on. Best wishes. Clare

Mine is nothing to do with hormones. My HB can plummet in a week and reverse the next.

I have had a level of 6.5 on one day followed by 8.0 the next as I was cross-matched for transfusion.

Do you have something you are taking/eating regularly which is blocking iron absorption? I think that both calcium and oxalic acid interference with iron absorption.

The only thing I take regular is dissolvable paracetamol. I've god a good balanced diet.

Sorry. I didn't mean to suggest anything about your diet. I found that I was taking my iron supplement at breakfast when I also had many calcium rich foods. They interfered with iron absorption, I think. Other ideas are from googling iron deficiency.

My online research says bleeding is not the only cause of iron loss; intestinal parasites may also cause it.

Does seem strange and it can be millions of things that can affect this like food and drugs. Parasites are not looked at much in the UK but can be a cause of all sorts of issues and cures. Hookworms have been proven to help asthma and hay-fever sufferers but have to be kept under control. The research has found that some parasites will keep you healthy so they can feed on what they want and everyone is happy. But they grow and we do not, so it then makes us ill.

I am on warfarin and my blood can go up and down for no reason. I had a tablet change that made me ill and threw the INR out and it has not become stable since even after putting me back to my tablets I was on with a few tweaks?

Hope you get it sorted soon.
