I went for the spyrometry test today. I was told I had the lungs of a 99 year old when I found I had it in January and today it said 93. Can I get any younger lol as im 46.

I saw the nurse today. I am going to see the doctor on Christmas eve. I think he said I DO.

Thats great news! We all wish to hear that. You say you feel worse, so something else is going on. Don't they tell you anything, when you get the test?

Hi Ruby, not really as its the nurse who does it and I have to go back to see the doctor on or around xmas eve and he will give me the results unless anything really serious has shown up, but when I saw him a fortnight he said that my COPD was getting worse which is why I needed another spirometry test. So I am a little confused.

Gillian, i hope you ask for a copy of the PFT results each time you have them. You can then discuss them with e.g. the BLF helpline nurses. You are entitled to them so be assertive when you ask!

Ive been told by a very senior resp nurse specialist that the lung ages are a bit of a gimmick. Which is nice for me as they reckon mine are around 130 years old

Hi Gillian. ...I agree with 02 specialist nurse that's it's a bit of a gimmick to compare age and lungs in that way.....

Having said that I am now a little bit curious on how and why they do that.

Your 46 years old and so are your lungs.

Ask for copies of all your tests...they have to give them to you.

Really I didn't know that we could ask for a copy of them and I don't know anything about BLF helpline nurses or anybody else. I just get a cup of tea afterwards each time and have to see the doctor in 4 weeks. Oh dear you are older than me congratulations and sorry to hear too.

How is lung age arrived at ?

Is it related to fev 1 ?

No idea I looked at the reading on the spirometry test yesterday, but the doctor told me in January that I had the lungs of a 99 year old. It is copd stage 2. I don't know what fev1 is as he hasn't mentioned anything really other than that.

Gillian . The FEV is like the chief figure . If you have any printout info it should include fev1.

It refers to maximum volume of

air exhaled in one second. Maximum as they try to get us to do our best possible. It s expressed as a percentage of the

norm for so,eone of your age and weight.

interesting as I always wondered how to calculate our lung age and there hey presto is the maths to do. However i think we should be careful with that as , i mean , how many people of say 130 do we see out and about ? And yet there are aparantly many of such a lung age and older. So it can t be that

Yes I know her story i was already here in France when she died

in 97. She even remembered Van Gogh coming into her uncle s art supply shop.

I wonder what her lung age was .possibly younger than her.

Incidentally i tried the formula a.d noticed if you give a difference of one each it worsens by about 3 years for me .

So i don t rate it as something too useful.
