A Little Something That Might Help Your COPD

Hello My Friends, Greetings from San Antonio, Texas! It's very strange what has happened this past hour. I have had a rough past few days breathing. I got on Internet to see if there were COPD treatments that I am unaware of and up popped Health Unlocked, which impressed me and caused me to join.

As a child, I grew up in New York City, in a climate much like parts of England, but temperature and atmosphere changes much more severe. From the time I was 14 until I joined the military at 18, I lived in a Cold Water Flat with my Nana. It was often over 100 degrees in the summer, and below freezing in the winter and we had neither Heat or Air Conditioning. Winters were the most trying on my health and we didn't have all the sophisticated antibiotics that we have today. When I had a cold or chest congestion, Nana would pull out a jar of Vicks Vapor Rub and put it on my chest. It worked! Well I put some Vicks on my mustache about a hour ago, and I was amazed how it helped my breathing,

I will also be looking into some of the remedies cited by your members.

Thank You People!

Hi & a very warm welcome to our forum.

I'm not an expert but I think the menthol in Vicks chest rub will have opened up your nasal passages & helped with your breathing through your nose.

It's a great feeling not to feel a stuffy nose, like a breath of fresh air.

I'm sure other members will come along & give you their opinions & remedies.

Take care 😀

I am glad you found us. Welcome to the site.

Hi nice to meet you and welcome to the site. My mother swore by vicks and us kids didn't like her rubbing it on us. x

Thank you for the Warm Welcome! I hope that I can contribute to this forum in the future, and also learn from it.

By the way, as a young US Army soldier, I was one of 9 US military stationed with the Brits at Gatow RAF base in Berlin, Germany which was very enjoyable, and also where I met my wife of 60 years.

Welcome to the site. You have come to the right place to learn about copd. I'm from New jersey, usa. 40 degrees here tonight. I was raised with the jar of vicks also. My mom still keeps a jar under her pillow. I find it works quite well for a stuffy nose. Also on the forehead for a headache. I also have copd. I joined the site a yr. ago and was amazed how much I learned. Ask any questions you may have and someone will help you.

Rubyxx 😊 😊

Hi Ruby, New Joyzee, was where I spent seven wonderful years during my military career. Camp Kilmer, Fort Dix, Livingston missile base, and Fort Hancock where I did lots of Bass Fishing. Thanks for the welcome!

Nice to meet you. Imagine you re having some fine weather there in Texas at the moment?

in reply to freefaller

It's been Beautiful! When I think that about ten days ago we broke the record, here in San Antonio, for the hottest day on record, and the past few days have been below 80 degrees, sunny. and just wonderful golfing weather.

Mention of Vick brings back a memory. I met my husband at college and we got engaged at the end of my first year. He had been there a year before me and went to Nigeria to work and I went back to college to complete my course. During the winter I had a chest infection and the housekeeper said to me "What you need is some Vick on your chest"; then she stopped, blushed bright red and said "Oh, I am so sorry, I didn't think" - my husband's name was Vic!

A small safety note. Anyone who is using oxygen, do not use Vicks vaporub or any petroleum product. Vicks is a petroleum product and being such, is flammable.

Cute story! Don't ask me why but it reminds me of the one about a Texas Aggie who are students at Texas A&M college, of which Pres. G.W, Bush is an alumni, are infamous for supposedly saying Dumb Things...like one Aggie who thought that diarrhea was a hereditary disease, because he heard that it runs in your jeans. Corny, I know.

Firstly welcome. I have used vicks to open the nasal area since a child. I do have nasal spray but I have found over time it gives me nose bleeds?

I also use a technique were you inhale warm water in the nose. It is not the most pleasant experience but it does clear the nose.

Be well

Olbas oil is also very good. You can sprinkle on a handkerchief/your pillow. I put it in hot water in a bowl and put it in my lounge and leave it or in my washbasin with a towel over my head and breathe it in. My mum has to go to the pulmonary clinic on fri so i am going with her if i learn anything new will share with everybody. I like everyone with copd have good/bad days. Panic attacks are the worst so any useful tips thanks in advance.

Hi Jaysha - I was having panic attacks earlier in the year, not about breathing but other stuff after a hospitalisation, and i was not sleeping. My GP prescribed Mirtazapine which is a generic anti depression/anxiety medication and I haven't looked back. Anxiety is now ordinary and manageable and I sleep like a top. :)

A very warm welcome to you, Sandan.

Vick has been a standby in my family for as long as I can remember. I wonder if anyone remembers Wintergreen and Friars Balsam?

Hi and welcome Sandan. Vicks is great. They also do a product which lots of us use called First Defence. Its a nasal spray which prevents or lessens the symptoms of colds. Even my doctor recommends it. Look forward to your posts. :)

H I, yes if you are being kept awake coughing at night, try Vicks vapour rub slathered on the soles of your feet, pop some socks on and most people will sleep. I have used this for some time and it works for me.

I swear by Vicks vapour rub too but as on oxygen cannot use as freely as I would like to. I do put some in my facial sauna with a little water to inhale before bed. I again use olbas oil that is brilliant stuff - rub it in on any aches and pains the warming sensation works wonders too

I do the same at night as well as rubbing it on my chest. Really helps me to sleep.

Hello Sandan and welcome to the "family."

I've stayed in Texas many times (Houston) and actually did my degree there. What I found surprising was the amount of rain you get there - nearly as bad as England :-D

I hope you can get any help, should you need it from the forum, or we're always here for a chat and a laugh.

Take care. XX
