I think it took me about 18 years to stop I can't tell you how many times I stopped and started again both my parents died from smoking related illnesses. Then I met a young girl who had used ZYBAN and she said all her cravings had gone so I thought I would give it a go I knew it was my last chance nothing else had worked for me .I was actually living with 2 smokers when I did it ,it was so simple I would recommend it to anyone go and see your GP and get a prescription.

Good luck

Thanx for reply. I tried champpix and zyban but they both made me feel strange. Like bein on the outside lookin in. Hard to explain. They both took away the cravings but only for a short period then . Fags tasted fowl thou. But still didn't stop me. I to watched my mom take her last struggle to breath and that was so awfull to see. I'm useless and have no willpower and shamed by my actions

Don't feel bad just keep trying to give uphave you tried ecigs apparently they are very good you still get the nicotine but not all the other rubbish that's in tobacco

Take care just remembered my friend couldn't take whole dose of champix so she took half dose and managed to stop

It's been 9 month since I stopped smoking , I went to the doctor and they gave me champix and councilling weekly or fortnightly u also used an ecig for a short time with 0%nicotine once I didn't want a cig anymore I kept telling myself I wasn't getting anything out of the ecig so I slowly stopped using it .it is difficult to stop and I wish you well .you might try and fail lots of times before you give up but I am sure you will get there. Good luck

Hi Violet, thought Id chip in with my bit. I was a roll your own smoker for 45 years, 20 months ago I was breathless I just decided to give up the dreaded weed. Tried patches and that plastic inhalator. managed 4 weeks. Started again and set myself a date to stop. Bought an e-cig, vapour type. I couldn't walk 20 meters without being so out of breath I couldn't talk. May 2 2014 was my start the vaping day. And I can honestly say Ive never touched a cig since. June this year was told I had copd, obviously I had it back then, but with exercise, vaping, and a positive outlook, Im living my life better than I was 10 years ago.

Give yourself a break and set yourself a goal. Do it because you WANT to, NOT because you have to.

xx good luck.

Hello Violet1,

In FEB2013 I had a reading of FEV% of 27 ( very severe), in 2014 I stopped smoking tobacco and changed to ecigs and improved to 32 (severe). This year has seen a greater improvement and now stands at 43, still severe but a great improvement. If you can't stop smoking tobacco, go to ecigs. As you can see by the above it is worth while.

I am 72 and have smoked since a teenager and, I hate to admit it, I cannot quit completely but ecigs are the next best action.

Good luck in your endeavours.

That certainly gives me hope Pete, my first reading gave me 43% and with exercise and everything else Im doing I know Ive improved, but don't go back to nurse for another reading till end of month. Hoping its a better reading.

Hi Pete, Jude (and Violet of course) the e-cig really saved my life, but for that I doubt I would still be here after smoking for 60+ years - going on for 6 years vaping now and so pleased with all the positive research and the review from Public Health England (I live in Wales which is the only area of the UK that wants a ban in public places, even the Republic of Ireland has rejected that). Wanted to ask if you, Pete and Jude had noticed a decrease in infections since using e-cig? I certainly have, though pick up the odd one and have recently had a real beauty needing abs x 2! Have only needed these 4 times since Jan 2010 where I used to have them 3 or 4 times a year. There are only 3 ingredients in an e-cig compared with the thousands in smoked tobacco and one of these, prop. glycol, is used as a sanitiser in air conditioning systems, so I reckon it's killing a lot of the "nasties" - I vape like mad when going near crowded places and if anyone round me has a cold or sneezes I up my intake! It's really not like quitting at all - I failed to stay off the weed many times, the longest I ever went was 2 years - I know I will never smoke again and I don't miss it because I honestly enjoy vaping more. I hope you will give these a try Violet, a lot of Stop Smoking Services are willing to advise you, but some are still unenlightened, and a lot of doctors don't seem to have a clue. I wish you luck whichever method you use, because you really must stop taking all that muck into your lungs if you want to improve your health. We smoke for the nicotine but die from the tar - well e-cigs give you the best of both worlds, but do some research and get decent kit.

Afternoon Dragonmum, I do have to agree with you that infections have decreased greatly. I too believe that the vape saved my life. I really don't think I would be here now or at the least very close to the end. The fact I couldn't talk after a short distance was scary. Ive had no chest infections since giving up. Colds are held at bay with honey and lemon in warm water every morning and upped to nightly too if I think I have a throat tickle. Ive noticed I don't vape as often as I did at first, but if Im having a game of bingo online (free one in Facebook) I vape like mad. I love the fact I can take a deep breath without coughing and find myself testing how long I can breathe in, hold and then breathe out. Life is just so much more enjoyable these days.

Just don't give up giving up. You'll get there eventually, and lots of folks have the odd one now and then when they first start stopping. My neighbour started vaping bout a month ago, but also smoked the odd ciggie, he has today just reached his 14th day of no cigs just vape. So each to our own way of stopping. Don't beat yourself up and stick with it. Well done so far.

Violet, first of all don't feel guilty about smoking..............we did'nt know the truth when we started all those years ago and it soon became an addiction. I gave up 15 yrs ago with Zyban........... but now have IPF, one of life's testers. lol! Lots of good advice here on how to stop and I'm sure you will find one that suits you..............good luck.

Violet, don't worry about the odd ciggie - my son took two years of having the odd one but is now completely smoke free; this is why vaping works so well, there is no wagon to fall off. You'll find that as time passes you'll enjoy vaping more than smoking and then you're home and dry; just count the number you are NOT smoking, find a flavour that really appeals to you and invest in really good kit. Stop beating yourself up - you're doing great. I vape a very clean lemon these days and it has the added benefit that spiders hate it - I hate them so it's win-win for me. You will do this Violet, just take it slow and easy - not everyone stops overnight.

I smoked for over 30years and due to RA I had to give up .I invested in a really good vape machine .Ive suprised myself how easy it's been .I still have the occasional craving to have a cig but I'm determined to give the biologic medication the best chance of working .I was told it can be less effective .Guess I was more fed up with being in pain than the need for a cig .If someone told me to stand on my head I would do it if it meant I would feel somewhat 'normal '

Keep trying never give up giving up .
