Might not see much of me. But "I will be back!"

I have not been on of late as I have had my eldest son rushed into hospital with Acute Myeloid Leukaemia. He had a blood test week last Tuesday as he was very tired. by 16:00 he was called and told to go to A&E were after more tests it was confirmed by 20:00. Both my parents have died though leukaemia?

He was blued and 2'd to another specialist hospital the next day and has now had a bone marrow test and a central line installed. His brother has already been tested for matching (25% chance).

He is now in his second week of chemo and all that goes with it. I have a sore throat and sticky chest so am not able to enter the room :(

My own health is not playing as well my INR is 5.6 and last night I dropped to 79 O2 but after forced expansion got to my near normal. I have not added my usual comments as I do not have my head in a good place at the moment. PMA

Be well

  • Oh offcut I'm devastated to hear your news. Tell your son at Chemo a few weeks ago I had a long chat to a man in his early thirties with two small children, one only five months old who is fighting Leukaemia. He is having chemo now them stem cell. He was very upbeat and cheery. Chemo is very tiring and weakening, I know. Please give him my best wishes and tell him to stay strong and positive.

    Take care of yourself too.

Love and best wishes to you and all your family.

  • OMG Offcut I am so sorry to hear about you Son - such a shock and worry for you and your family. Sorry too your own health is not so good - anxiety makes it much worse.

I am wishing the very best for your Son. Stay strong and as a family you will all get through this.

    With love

  • We are all pulling together with the odd frayed edge showing.

  • Sorry to hear this offcut, wish you and your son well, stay positive.

  • Almost always ;)

  • Sorry to hear the news about your son offcut, I've always said I'm glad it was me that fell ill in the family and not my nearest and dearest. I think I would find it harder to cope with it all if it had been a close family member rather than myself.

There are tough times ahead but there's every chance he will make a good recovery.

  • Thank you. Yes a rocky road ahead but I am keeping the PMA

  • My heart goes out to your son, you and your family Offcut.

I hope this good luck story will help - my daughters best friend was diagnosed with aplastic (wrong spelling) leukaemia at 9. I realise It's not the same but she had 25% chance of survival even with the bone marrow transplant she later had.

They were told she would never have a child if she did survive. Joanna not only survived she went on to have her own little family - this was over 25 years ago and medicine has moved on leaps and bounds since then.

I Will be thinking of you with love.

  • Thank you, it is good news like that that helps us all

  • Oh Offcut I am so sorry. How awful for you but especially for your poor son. The treatment for leukaemia has come on in leaps and bounds since your parents day so there is a lot more hope for him. Wishing you and all the family the best and am thinking of you all. Take care. xx

  • So true but it was such a shock when it all came to light. My son saw the way it attacked my mother last year which has not helped his thoughts but they are doing all they can to help physically and mentally

  • Oh dear, Offcut, how awful for you and your family I know it sounds like a platitude, but he is in the best place. It's a shame that you can't see him, but an infection is the last thing he wants. You need to make sure you look after yourself as well, as you are going to need a lot of mental, and physical, strength to get through this.

Sending my thoughts, hopes and prayers for you,

    Christine. XXX

  • Thank you so much.

  • Sending you and your son strength and healing thoughts Offcut. A friend of mine has a teenage daughter who has this, and been having treatment for it for two years. She is doing very well, so hoping your son will respond well to treatment. xx

  • How absolutely terrifying - I am so so sad to read this. Sending you and your family and especially your son every good wish and lots of love for a speedy recovery. Take good care of yourself xxx

  • Thank you

  • Hi Offcut,

I am so deeply sorry to hear of your sons diagnosis, and I know how terrifying it must be for you all.

As others have said, treatment for this has come on leaps and bounds in recent years,, especially with bone marrow transplants and better medication, so try and stay as positive as you can, and know that your son is getting good and speedy treatment.

My heart goes out to you and your family.

    You are in my thoughts,

lots of extra special warm hugs

    Huggs xxxxx ((((((((((Offcut)))))))))))

ps I meant to say that I hope you feel much better soon too, and can visit your son. xx

  • I think a lot is stress with all what is going on. The more we are told the better we all are as there is a good chance, but it could be a long haul but as long as he gets well at the end that does not matter so much.

Thank you for the hugs I feel very lonely in a crowded place at the moment.

  • HI Offcut,

Of course you and your family are completely stressed out by this, who wouldn't be? You have each other to lean on and all rally around each other. It must be so difficult, but it sounds as if everything is going according to plan just now, but I do understand it is the waiting game that is hard to play. I know it is a cliché but he is in the best place just now, and is being well looked after. Often the hospital will have some form of a support team for both patient and family, or can put you in touch with people going through similar experiences, so that is maybe something you could think about.

If you can feel better physically, then that will help you emotionally too, and give you a boost.

Take all the help you can get, and although you may feel it, you are never alone, but I know what you mean.

Take special care, and we are all rooting for you and your son.

    Extra special hugs,

    Huggs xxxx

  • Thank you I am sure I will be back with many stories of this and my own trials and tribulations

  • Ok offcut, will share a wonderful story, my friends brother developed leukaemia at the age of 19, prognoses not good, told he won't be able to have children after the treatment, he's now 60 and a grandfather ! His family were/ are into healthy living and he decided garlic is natures blood cleanser, so he ate heaps of garlic, raw , for an age, consequently people would only meet up with him away from his home ! Even now his sister, when she smells intense garlic it will transport her back to this very difficult time for the family, I beleive Julie waters daughter recovered well and lives on after leukaemia, there's always hope xxxx

  • They have said that treatment is improving all of the time

  • Oh dear Offcut, I am so sorry to hear your about your son, my sister had AML five years ago, it was a six month haul but.she is fine now. Medicine is a marvellous thing. Don't forget to look after yourself as well. Take care xx

  • It is going in the right direction but we are at the no one knows until after the first lot of treatment stage?

  • I just now saw your post, Offcut. How terrible for you and your family. As everyone has said before me , medicine

has improved over the years. I didn't know leukemia was hereditary. My thoughts are with you. Take care of yourself and think positive. Hope to hear some good updates soon. Lots of good vibrations coming your way.

  • I have been told all along that it does not run in families. But my son's consultant has asked for our family history as even he thinks it is a strange coincidence

  • Hi offcuts was reading stuff given my own blood cells and even tho they say that about it you can inherit immunity issues blood disorders some can have it for years not knowing till it because active

Like others have said truly am sorry am glad treatments going well he dose have age on is side

  • After a week without Internet communication I find your post. You must be devastated but leaps and bounds with the treatment now. So everything crossed for your son. As for you sit back and think good thoughts and get rid of bad bugs. You will feel much better when you can see him and then the pasted on smile will become real. We all know it is easier to be the one with it as opposed to the worriers. Take care

    Love Dozy ☺ 🐀 xx

  • We can see that they are doing all they can and it is a treatable condition. But he is still our 6'2" baby.

  • My first thought on reading your reply was ouch, your poor wife. My apologies for the flippancy but that's my way of dealing with things. Take care

    Dozy ☺ 🐀 xx

  • :)

  • O'h bless him i cant imagine what the poor lad is going through being on the receiving end to this dreadful illness.

I wish him a very good recovery.

  • Thank you

  • What devastating news for you and your family. I do hope a matching bone marrow donor can be found soon.

It is worse for you and your family seeing him suffer. Your boy is young and strong, the illness and the chemo will lay him low for a time.

Sending you Healing prayers and much love.

    Azure sky :)

  • He now has a rash and another temperature but everything is as planned.

  • Oh dear I do hope he is making progress and that the chemo side effects are not too awful for him.

Thinking of you and your family.

  • Sorry to hear you are having such an awful time, but you must stay strong and look after yourself so that you can get through all this ... take care and I really hope everything works out for you and your son.
