I hope that any suffering you my be experiencing is bearable.
I was prescribed the above medication recently to help with my bronchiectasis and every time that I try to use it I seam to develop a dry hecky cough is this just me or is there some knowledge of this with you guys?

I take this (supposed to be 2 tablets 3 times a day but am not always good at remembering), but was told it would not suit everybody (side effects), also does not work for everybody by thinning mucous. I do get that sort of cough, plus voice can get very husky but cannot say I would connect it with the use of carbocisteine. Others may have a different experience. Personally, if there is a possibility of something helping I tend to give it some time as side effects can diminish with time. On the other hand who wants to take extra meds if they do not do any good. I think you will get a more helpful reply from somebody else on forum. Kaye

I have been on this med for the past month and found it a great help thinning the sticky mucus and helping me clear my chest. No side effects but as always drink plenty of water to wash the capsules down.

Hi my wife can't take the carbocisteine tablets as she is allergic to the colouring they use, Sunset Yellow. She was prescribed the liquid form instead, which does work for her.
As an alternative to standard medicine, she has used Marshmallow Root capsules, which for her had no side effects and do work.
I have never had it but after my lung biopsy they thought I may as I had lots of mucus but couldn't cough it up. They said there would be side effects when I said I had never had it before and then they questioned them selves and in the end just put me on antibiotics and things got better in a couple of days. Best thing is to ask your GP who prescribed it for you if you are worried.
I have bronchiectasis and was prescribed it. I endured it for about a month but stopped taking it. I too found it gave me a dry hacking cough. I don't really have any mucus to cough up so this made me cough but that's all. I hated it. Sorry not very helpful but it just didn't do anything for me except give me 'the cough'.

I too was put on that medication and all it did was give me a dry non productive cough. It is supposed to dry up the excess mucus. It didn't agree with me but it does help people who are unable to get rid of excess mucus. I stopped taking it.
Maybe seek advice from a medic?

I have taken in the past because I had a very sticky mucus and was getting a lot of infections, but did suffer from side effects. I have now found my own solution which works for me. I have cut out all dairy products ( I miss cheese the most) and I use a steam inhaler for 5 minutes before I sit down and rest on the evening. thank you so much for your reply I don't eat a lot of dairy products but I do like a bit of cheese occasionally! I will look at argos now all the best take care.
Hi Andy I understand why you have cut out dairy but is it wise to stop eating a whole food group? I thought this could have serious repercussions for your health?
One of my sisters (who doesn't have any lung problems and has never smoked) had a bad cough for years. Eventually she cut out dairy completely then reintroduced it item by item. She found she was intolerant to milk and ice cream, but not the rest of the dairy group. She doesn't cough at all now. She buys almond milk and rarely eats ice cream but has her coffee black usually for this reason. Interestingly while we were out for coffee she started coughing and I pointed out that she had had normal milk with her coffee.
You might find you are able to eat cheese again! x

Thank you for the information and I will give it a try. It was constant very sticky phlegm and 7 chest infections in a row and a nurse's suggestion which caused me to give up dairy. I will keep my fingers crossed because I consumed more cheese than milk, yogurt and ice cream.

My sister finds it is the liquid dairy she has problems with not the hard stuff like cheese and butter. She is very relieved as she loves cheese and butter

Thanks all of you for your feed back, I'm with my GP in the morning to discuss. I think part of the problem is that I am taking antibiotics at the moment and they are inclined to reduce my mucus production anyway.

I have been taking carbosisteine meds for nearly3 years now. (since I had a pneumonectomy) I find it can make me dry for the 1st hour after taking them, but then I am fine. I know if I don't take them my cough starts and I cant shift the mucus.
I've not read all the replies yet so excuse me if I'm repeating.....
The nurse at PR told me that carbocysteine takes three weeks to work!
That's the reason many take it all the time on a maintenance dose IE I take two morning two evening. Some take one 3 x daily to keep some in their system and then up it at exacerbation. It makes the mucus less sticky enabling it to loosen a easier to shift.
Perhaps your cough is because the mucus is a little thinner & wants to come out?
Anyway, good luck with it. I find it marvellous in avoiding infections (I don't have bronchiectasis Though). P

Hi i have recently been prescribed the same for my copd. I have ,since started this drug coughed alot more and as you say it a dry cough. Not nice. I am 5 days into the trial. I will be contacting my health care provider. Its not just you hun. Does not suit everyone. Good luck.x
