Another Quiet Enough Week In Our Street...

It's been another quiet week in our street.

The men with the dynamite didn't turn up on Tuesday to blow the old bridge up after all...

I've made contact, after many years of estrangement, with Himself's youngest son...and I say youngest...he's fifty-two. FaceAche has it's good points sometimes...hoping the contact will strengthen as times goes on.

My poor Pansies are practically drowned from all the rain...the bright orange Marigolds are disintegrating...and the slugs and snails are growing bigger and fatter by the day. But the roses are positively spectacular...hundreds of blooms round the old pig-sty and the cheap rambler I bought to go on the garden fence has surpassed itself...

The son who lives in Northern Sweden has been out in the forests gathering mushrooms...wonky brown ones and tiny orangey coloured ones and everything in between...this is the same son who lived on fish fingers and Dairylea cheese when he was a child and recoiled in horror at the thought of anything else on his plate. Now he eats Moose, served one hundred different ways and odd shaped fungi.

Our local paper announced there were 72 public houses in the town in the 40's and 50's...now there are only 8. It's a seriously tiny town...little more than a village really...72 'pubs seems somewhat excessive. I'm not going to mention the Irish penchant for drink...

The new owners of the bed and breakfast on the corner of our street still haven't opened the blinds...or cleaned the windows actually...their dog is quite nice though.

Jack went missing the other afternoon...Wendy wasn't in the slightest bit bothered but all the neighbours organised a search for him...he was deep in the forestry making himself a camp in the way small boys do. Blissfully unaware that everyone...except for his Mum...were really worried.

And we went to choose a kitten and came back with Murphy...he's an absolute dote. Uses his litter tray...eats up all his food with great relish...and keeps us endlessly distracted and entertained...

Oh I know exactly what you mean about the garden. The snails had a whale of a time while I was away. As per the weds grew quicker than the flowers and like yours some were flattened with all the rain. Have managed to tidy up a bit now, and my son finally managed to get grass cut. So looking better now.

And just why don't snails and slugs eat weeds?

that's a lovely rambler rose I bought one from pound land almost the same colour it just said climber on it put in on one of the trellises thought if it was a climber it would repeat flower during the summer but turned out it was a early flowering rambler so looks love when its out then most of summer it just green .72 pubs blimey would have been a long night going for a pub crawl round all those .

in reply to mmzetor

I think some of those 'pubs were probably only open during shop hours...they're not run by breweries you see...privately owned mostly ...there's still a bar in the ironmongers shop! He opens for business at eight in the morning...lol

The rose in the photo was really cheap...about € 1 that's all

Roses look lovely, I wonder if there is plenty of manure round the old pig stye and that is just what the roses would like. Our little market town is just full of coffee shops, restaurants, hairdressers, beauty shops, but we do also have a flourishing market and a good selection of independent shops. Plus a beautiful old church and river. Love Murphy. iris x

Your little town sounds really lovely...a good place to wander round.

There's loads of well rotted donkey manure round the roses...that probably helps!

I have that same rose clambering all over the stump I had left when our giant cupressus had to come down. Left it at 10ft (cheaper than trying to get the root out) and made a feature of it with roses, clematis and honeysuckle - the latter took over so had to go. Isn't there something Victorian looking about this tiny rose? No scent but there are 2 others to supply that. So glad you changed puss's name to Murphy - he really doesn't look like a Roger. Everything soggy here too but if we will live in Ireland or Wales......!

He doesn't does he...look like Roger I mean.

The rose is gorgeous isn't it?
