Feckin' Snails...

Well...I'm sorry to go on about it but I've just ventured outside to pull some carrots for supper and I swear my teeth are chattering...feet are a bit blue actually but then I will insist on wearing flip-flops because it's flaming June...

Then there are those feckin' snails...not pretty snails who live in lovely coloured shells...these are thumping great big snails whose shells are a seriously boring brown...they breed like rabbits and chomp their way through my poor pansies...gnawing at their dear little faces...it's the giddy limit when I pick them up...gingerly...and they stick their heads out and wave their eyes about...'Oooo, hello human'...I act like a big girls blouse and shudder in case a teeny bit of their slimy body happens to touch my fingers and sling them as far as I can into the ditch...

Whoever looked at one and thought it would be delicious boiled up with a bit of garlic...arrange tastefully on a platter and serve up for supper...with some thinly sliced brown bread and butter.

Honestly...when you think about it, wouldn't you have to be seriously hungry to contemplate such an idea...

And they carry all sorts of nasty germs...though I suppose you wouldn't be worrying about salmonella if you were the sort prepared to boil up a saucepan full of snails...

I use a trowel and toss my snails onto a rail siding at the bottom of our road,I collect them in a kiddies sand bucket then take a walk, have done this for the last couple of yrs, this year I have only found 5 snails so I am getting rid of them,I did this every evening, now just twice a week as I don't see them now, yippee.

" Hehehehe Vashti...That snail will be back.....Did you know that snails always return home....a friend of mine many moons ago, showed a few of us doubting Thomas's...Proof..she collected all the snails up from her mother's garden...we where all watching intently.. and as it was raining. she collected dozens upon dozens.she then proceeded to paint with her nail varnish a red blob on each shell...Put them back into the bag..we all drove off with them and scattered them around the Licky Hills...at least 10 miles away..true to her word....3 months later they all turned up..not all at once ..but over the course the week..they where all back...So vashti...Wear yer shoes and watch yer pansies too......lol..Megan."

U need a hedge hog for the snails, make sure the res a hole for them to get into your garden.

We get loads of snails in our garden. I just chuck them next door hoping they will help to keep their hedge from coming too far into our garden! x

We have had some wet weather, snails are bad enough, but it is the slugs I really hate. A year or so back, I found a strange light coloured one, it looked an eerie green colour, by the torch light. George had been poking at it.

A long while ago, I was at a little party, there were some lovely snacks, canapes I suppose. Well, there were some small savoury biscuits with bright green butter with little green bits. I ate several and thought they were delicious.

Then my companion sidled up to me and murmured "You do realise you have been eating snails!!!" To say i was in a state of shock, is an understatement.

Omg my biggest hate snails I can't even look at them make me shudder. :(

I noticed a snail like trail in front of our fridge freezer and was horrified on opening the freezer door to find a small slug nestled on the base . I removed it into the garden but found another one a couple of days later. After googling pest control I have bought some copper slug tape which is also for snails which can be used on pots etc as a barrier, giving an electric shock if they try to cross it. Fingers crossed I don't see any more.

in reply to

I put a copper tape all around my 3 small veggie plots and was pleased to see it working better than anything (or should I say everything!) I'd previously

tried. It was rather expensive to buy enough for the job but pots would be much easier to do.

Nice that everyone here are finding 'alternative' methods to deal with the little critters other than murder, lol - as tempting as it might sometimes seem!!

So glad it works.

I wanted to go on a slug chucking frenzy when I saw they'd munched through every stem on my Clematis and almost killed off my Delphiniums! grrrrrr! There can hardly be a better sight or sound than a Blackbird smashing snails for breakfast! :D huff xx

Oh dear Vashti. I suppose you tried putting a barrier of salt around your flowers. They said a glass of beer attracts them in, but I don't drink beer so never bought the stuff just for snails. I did have snail pellets. but my naighbour said she didn't want me to use it because she ahs a lovely ginger cat. Yes, it's true, he is absolutely lovely and she looks after him like a baby who has now reached 17 years. He catches mice! My wife kept some Fair Trade products like toilet rolls and other food stuff. Toilet rolls were so cumbersome taht we put them in the shed. This is where the mice elected to go. We found one who had youngs, So did the cat, he pounced on them all, thank you Ginger!

Anyway, I don't have dahlias because they are eaten the day they bloom! My marigolds have survived, so have my roses which are thorny. I have no other answer than your systematic throwing them as far as possible. MInd you they come back just as fast. Oh dear! Mic
