Foot In Mouth...!

Oooo... I made a horrible mistake this morning...the 'phone rang and when I picked it up the voice on the other end asking for me by name was exactly like those incredibly irritating people who 'phone saying they want to mend your computer...

So I snapped at this voice and was about to put the receiver down when he said he was from Baywater...the oxygen people. Letting me know my new machine will be delivered next week...he gave me no time to apologise...just rang off.

Then Brian from next door came round to ask if Himself would check on the cattle 'cos they're all away to a big wedding...I totally forgot his name. There he was in his super smart clothes...though I did hope he was going to change his shoes...brown shoes and dark grey pinstripe trousers look weird...and he'd drowned himself in some exotic cologne...couldn't have been aftershave 'cos he wears a beard...it was so strong when Himself came in a few minutes later he asked who'd been in the cottage...and Brian hadn't come in...he'd only stood on the doorstep.

I said it was the youngest lad from next door and he said you mean Brian and then the pennies began to drop...

I've kept a low profile for the rest of the day...

Oh dear, just not your day,but I can understand you snapping on the phone, when they ring now and ask if they can speak to me,I say depends who's calling, and they ring straight off. Wonder if the same person will deliver your machine,if so at least you will get the chance to explain.

Bet the cologne did not help your breathing, hope you are ok,

in reply to redted

That's what I do now...I say are you a friend of mine? If not go away...and they do!

Oh dear, how embarrassing. I have been caught like that. Now I say "who are you, what do you want?" If they start the usual nonsense I say firmly "no thank you please don't call again". Then I save the number as Junk 1, 2, and so on. On my mobile, I can block calls but not on our fancy BT smartphone. Biggest waste of money ever.

Sometimes I have a bit of fun, once I told a pushy salesman he was absolutely hopeless and was in the wrong job. He was so upset he rang me back to ask why. I just told him he was unprofessional.

Another time, a snotty salesman told me I was a dangerous woman! Mostly we ignore 023 numbers and all international ones. If I am doubt I go to "Who calls me" and check.

Oooo...a dangerous woman!

Just one of those days Vashti! We all have them. You sure make it sound funny though !!😀😀

Rubyxx 😊

in reply to rubyred777

Well...you have to see the funny side otherwise we'd be sitting in a corner with a blanket over our heads...lol

Really, he got what he deserved for not announcing himself when you answered the phone. Even when the people I'm calling have never heard of me and probably won't hear from me again I always start the conversation by telling them my name. I think it's common courtesy to give your name first up when calling someone.

Don't feel bad. I hope your day improved and you managed to breathe ok through the fumes of the young lad's cologne.

Left the door wide open after he'd gone...lol

Hi Vashti, understand your feeling. I am too frightened to answer the phone these days in case they charge my bank account . Just had a company saying they have charged my account for herbal goods, but I haven't ordered any or given them my bank details. When i checked the recorded number with the company they have no such number on there records for any agent. People wonder why we get irate on the phone. I have ten screened calls on my phone today and it is only 8.30 am. Hope you have a good bank holiday, with no stupid phone calls to mar it. :) :)

Hi Barnowl1, I have a telephone from the BT range which blocks sales calls, or you can buy a call blocker that fits into your telephone then you can choose the calls you want to block, The phone blocks what are called nuisance calls automatically. The phone was cheaper than the one you plug in and they do work to some degree but some calls still get through, it is mainly the call centers abroad that still get through.Phones can be found on line quite easily or ring BT if you are a customer. Hope that helps. Oh I have caller display on my phone too so I know the number who is ringing and it displays caller name if it is a regular number you use. However NHS don't display numbers so they have my mobile to contact me. good luck my phone cost £24 for base unit and one hand set well worth the outlay, but the ones that plug into your existing phone cost from £85. :) :)

Thank you so much Katie for your very detailed reply. It will be very useful and I shall look into it. I'm in a contract with Talk Talk at the moment so will not be able to use BT, but the device to put in your phone sounds a good idea. At the moment if I'm not busy tend to play games with them. One of them stayed on the phones 15 mins whilst I was supposedly answering the front door!! Have a good weekend and many thanks again for your reply barnowl.

Hi again Barnowl1 my contract is with Talktalk, but I have a BT phone and its BT that fix the lines ect when anything goes wrong not Talktalk. You can use any phone make on a talktalk package. My plug in came from, Cold Call Elimination Ltd, telephone 08007797788, if that is any further help.

Hello Katie,I can't believe I thought I needed a BT package to be able to have what make of phone I wanted. I put it down to the hot weather or even old age!!!! Have looked at all the details and considering a new phone rather than the plug in. My phones are quite old so think it might be more sensible. Thank you again for all your time and kindness I am very grateful. Best wishes barnowl.

I understand your irritation Vashti, i am sick of my phone being a way of people intruding into our home. They almost always seem to wast money. Computer is going the same way, loads of emails, I don't solicit & the blessed thing seems about its own activities, mostly when I am in a hurry to use it. I can't bear strong perfume, male or female and again it was being brought into your home. You handle it all with humour though Vashti. Hope your day is better today.

Love Margaret x

Oh Vashti you do make me laugh! I am just the same with the phone though and have snapped at people who are making genuine calls - oops! So many call centre people call us though so no wonder I get tetchy. Name forgetting is a great problem that Pete has and luckily I am there to pick his jaw up from the floor and help out.

You have a good weekend and leave Himself to answer the phone and the door. Take care xxxx

in reply to sassy59

Oh he's awful with the 'phone! Looks at me and hopes I'll answer 'cos he says speaking to someone he can't see makes him go all over peculiar...lol

have you registered with the TPS. I did and I don't get many now. if you get any calls you can complain to them, I was getting them from different places over the world, TPS can sometimes know who they are as companies here use over seas call centres and they get find if enough people complain.

I had a call one day he said his name was Peter (more like mohammedl), I asked where are you calling from. the reply was London. ok were in London reply High Wycombe. I had to laugh yah right. so where are you calling from reply London. the lady I am my reply was pi-- off and put the phone down. don't mean to offend anyone x

in reply to joyce741
