Stomach upset Symbicort??

I have various problems with the side effects of inhalers.

I have been changed to Symbicort which did not appear to have my normal problems BUT after a couple of days I have had the worst stomach upset that I can remember. Coincidence?

Having to get up many times in the night is bad enough but its worse as I use a CPAP.

Hello Edam, you have my sympathy, I've just had stomach problems after antibiotics, so glad I've finished the course now! I have not had Symbicort so I'm not familiar with it but I have Serevent 500 which gives me indigestion that the Omeprazoles don't touch, sorry I'm not much help. Huff xxx

Have you tried drinking Actimal to counteract the effects of the antibiotics, it is caused by the antibiotics killing off good bacteria as well as bad. Actimel replaces the good bacteria.

I inhale Symbicort night and morning and never had that problem, are you swilling your mouth out and gargling after you inhale, this stop it causing thrush in the mouth and throat as it is a steroid. Perhaps this would help. Keep smiling.

I've used symbicort and found it to be very good steroid inhalor. It may be coincidence that your stomach maybe a bug going round that you have caught so bear with it ,it's a good inhalor. Take care.x

I don't know what to say; I've used Symbi for several years without a hint of problems..., sorry.

Morning - My husband uses symbicort and has done for years. He has a really delicate stomach but this has not upset him. Perhaps it was just a coincidence? Hope you are feeling better, lots of love TAD xxx

Hi Edam. I had the same reaction on all the cortisone/steroid pumps and after 2 yrs of chronic diarrhea and changing of the pumps, found out I was allergic to all forms of them. My stomach also swelled.

I too have problems with certain inhalers. I can't use any with propellants (e.g. Ventolin) as they cause very sore throat and chest so I can only use dry powder inhalers. I also get chest pains and very bad indigestion-like pains with them. Dry powder Ventolin (Accuhaler) also Brycanil also causes the same but to a lesser degree. I seem to be OK on Spiriva though.

I've recently been using a steroid dry powder inhaler temporarily - Seretide - and am having the same problem again. Obviously I can't just stop it and am seeing the doctor in a couple of weeks to hopefully start reducing the dose and then come off it.

I haven't had the stomach upset you've experienced, nor tried Symbicort, but I get where you're coming from.

One thing that did help me is when you're taking antibiotics then also take a pro-biotic supplement. I'm not sure if there's enough pro-biotics in the Actimel drink, there certainly aren't in live natural yogurt. I usually use Acidophilus which replaces the good bacteria the antibiotics will kill off. I also take a course of pre-biotic. Pro-biotics will replace bacteria, Pre-biotics will feed the bacteria. Just don't take pre-biotics without the pro-biotics as you'll just be feeding the bad bacteria.

Like most of the replies i have not had any stomach problems with it but that dosnt mean its not causing yours

I was put on spiriva which stopped me passing water yet nobody else has had the problem although it was on the side effects.

It could be due to all sorts of things but the general rule is if you have had it more than a few days go to gp x

As I also take Warfarin Im wondering if there is some interaction with Symbicort

I've been on Warfarin for the last 12 years, and recently was asked to trial Symbicort with a view to replace Seretide as it is cheaper. I used it for a month without any adverse digestive reaction, but couldn't get on with is as it is a powder inhaler, and most of it ends up in my throat - I can only use the atomiser inhalers, and am currently trialling Fostair as an alternative. It seems that most people get on ok with it, but you may have a particular reaction which needs analysis at the docs.

As I have problems with Seretide and to a lesser extent Fostair causing weak legs and

Spiriva causing strange migraines why the hell have I been prescribed the highest dose, 400/12, of Symbicort . Surely I should have been prescribed a lower dose first as my COPD is only mild at present. Not happy grhh

I too have had stomach problems on it I think it even gets a mention in the side effects. I wish we could have just one inhaler that doesn't make me feel ill taking it!

I think its going to be a case of finding which inhaler has side effects which are least troublesome.

I will try Symbicort again once my stomach settles just in case it was a coincidence.
