Hospital appointment

Hi everyone, had hospital appointment yesterday to discuss my copd care plan, I have been prescribed Spiriva and Mucodyne, has anyone any information on these two drugs.

Are they any good ?

My husband has been taking Spiriva for about five years. It is used to open the airways for a 24 hour peirod - he takes his in the morning. It seems to help and he hasn't had any adverse reactions. Sorry can't help with the mucodyne although I have heard very good things about it. Hope the new drugs help you. Take care, love TADZHIKISTAN xx

Mucodyne contains "Carbocisteine" which makes your phlegm looser and thinner, therefore easier to bring up. The combination of both should help you.

Hi Lolly, do you know if they sell Carbocisteine over the counter in France? I ask because I'm too lazy (enjoying the sun today) to walk to the pharmacy for the conversation in my rubbish French. I'm running out.

Brown, Mucodyne/Carbocisteine is marvellous. Helps keep mucus less sticky so therefore easier to shift before bacteria can settle in to it giving us those nasty infections.

.... Edit: Mucodyne takes about 3 weeks to work so don't expect instant relief. Many of us take the maintenance dose and raise it during exacerbations

The answer is 'yes. ' MY GP was doing my prescriptions and I asked him if I just could buy it over the counter and he said' yes.' I do not know yet what it is called here...maybe just ' Carbocisteine,' as they are making everyone use the generic forms of drugs these days and my husband collected my prescriptions, so he did not ask.

I wondered about Carbo as I saw it advertised on TV.

I'll try for the statins and Montelukast as well as i will run out if I stay longer - as I'd like.

I see it's a bit chilly over your way. Glorious sunshine here - I can honestly say it's been brilliant here healthwise. Mostly fantastic and just plummet a bit when it gets very cold and damp (had 7 days of rain since 6 Dec and freak snow last Thursday).

Peege, Our weather has improved at last, but it does seem colder than where you are, even though we have the sunshine. I am going to the pharmacy myself tomorrow, so I will find out all about it.

When I was first pescribed Spiriva the very next day I saw an increase in my peak flow results! Was amazing!

Hi, I have been on Spiriva; plus Symbercort getting on for 10 years. I also use Singulair & Mucodyne. All very good, except for exaccerbations , I remain ok. Mx

Hi, I've have been on Spiriva 8 years+ it has helped keep my peak flows up, Mucodyne (carbocisteine) I used to get when I had exacerbations to help with thinning the phlegm as I had problems shifting it, I have been on it permenantly the past 2 years without any problems.

Hi I am on Spiriva which seems ok. Mucodyne was prescribed as I have problems getting phlegm up but it didn't help me for some reason. I don't use it now. I also take Serevent. I think this helps. This winter has been a bad one for me so I don't know for sure what is helping at all!!!! I am interested in finding out more about your care plan. Is it with a hospital nurse? Where I live, it is very difficult to find a COPD nurse and there are none who deal with bronchiectasis at all, for some reason. I have both COPD and bronchiectasis. My GP has no respiratory nurse and the hospital where I get treatment has a community nurse that I am trying to find out more about. Again, they will not deal with bronchiectasis, just COPD. Strange. I don't really know why as it also comes under COPD.

see if you can get help on breathing excercices because if you breath correctly u will be able to get phlem up

i also always have chewing gum the hot strong one airwaves brill for bringmuck up i have a little pipe had on prescrioption to buy 54quid but u can get on prescript if doc allows its called flutter google it it will show how it works

Thanks Shirley. I tried the flutter device before and it didn't help me unfortunately, but it is great for others, I know that. Which breathing exercises do you find help you? I try pursed lip breathing and in the mornings, I have been trying a little forced expiration breathing in bed (huffing) but it doesn't seem to help now, whereas in the past, it was more effective. stillmovin1 ..

im sorry dosent help you but they told me to drink plenty of fluids ie water fruit juice that loosen the gudger a lot and also if i have horrid time trying to clear throat i have airwasves chewing gums they def help look round for them pkt 4 pound in pound shop sigle expencive

Hi Stillmovin, I have a copd nurse at the hospital also voice therapy nurse to help with removing sputum from my voice box it has all been very well handled.

btown, that's great! I am trying to organise something with the GP's respiratory nurse service. Seems like I have to push hard for these things as otherwise, they just don't bother with me! stillmovin

well im sure u know what we are going to say they help me but may not help you hun but no side effects as i can recall but spiriva is egg shaped spinner you putyt blue tab in pierce then breath in untill u cant here any thing easy and tabs not sure how many a day u are taking but mk sure u tk all what you have been told to tk hun wish you well

Hi I have sever COPD and sever Ashma my VA doctor has me on Spiriva and Symbicort with Albuteral for emergency use. I've never felt better, I'm more confident now because of the inhalers. I Just started a exercise program that the doctor prescribed for me and I can see a better result.

Hope what you take works for you. I'm stateside so some of the meds you accross the pond use is new to me. Stick with what works and read all you can about your illness and trust the doctors 80% .... be 20% cautious . When I see my doctor I'm ready and have a list of questions from my research.
