I was wondering if any of you take Gabapentin. If so, what do you take it for, and does it help you?

Thanks

Hi Ruby. Yes I have been prescribed it for my spine. It did not help me, but that may well have been because ofthe large period between the injury and the med. It could be just me. Some folk find it helps them. Rib

ps. It is given to help with nerve pain

in reply to RibvanRey

Hi

On its own it does not help me but with co-codamol 30/500 it work s reasonably

I suffer with sciatica and Mortons neuroma (impinging nerve in the feet )

Hey Rib,

Hope your well.

I actually do take it for sciatica. I find it amazing. I used to have pins n needles in the back of both legs.I could barely sit down. No more now. How much do you take?

I don't use it Ruby. It didn't help me. I use morphine and other opiate meds to help control my pain issues. Basically I have too many pain issues over the majority of my body. Extreme lesions in a foot that keep it contracted like a claw. Which is like cramp for 30+ years non-stop, right up to head pain that is like having a screwdriver stabbed into the the site of the trauma. Rib

Hi Rubyred,

I take 3 Gabapentin 300mg capsules a day.I take them for pain relief for nerve damage caused by lung surgery.I am pleased with Gabapentin as my pain is much more controlled. My previous pain relief gave me constipation problems so I was happy to change.I do not notice any side effects.

Sorry Ruby that's bad of me DVT is Deep Vain Thrombosis (is that how you spell it ?) Right about the 3 wishes I have been really thinking about that and wish it was really possible, so that's one, then that the world could be happy and all those really poor and I mean poor who do not even have fresh water were able to have what we got available. Also if there is any spare than lets all smile xxx :)

Hi Ruby

yes I take it for my fibrimyalgia,

I would say its better than nothing for treating the fibro pain, but it is brilliant at relieving my restless leg syndrome

all the best Linda

Hi Linda

I agree. I have sciatica in my back which bothers the nerves in my legs. Used to be every little thing In the bed would get the nerves in my legs going. I take 300 mgs of that and sleep so well. How much do you take?

Hi Ruby oh sciatica is so horrible poor you!

I don't know why my legs decide to break dance all night and feel like they are made of concrete at the same time

.anyway the Gaberpentin seems to calm the whole fandango down.

I take 12 x 300 mgs a day which is the max they say they are allowed to prescribe.

but they hardly do anything to help the fibro pain

or the pain I have from the COPD and heart problems.

I have an appointment with the GP this afternoon (at their request)

I have a horrible feeling they will want to take the gaberpentin away and leave me with nothing. I have stage 4 COPD.

sorry to moan Ruby, you take care off yourself

love from Linda xxx

Hi Ruby, that's strange, it was there when I realised I'd put it in the wrong place. I'll try to remember what I wrote: Hi Ruby, I take 4 x 300 mg Gabapentin a day for severe pain in my groin. When I went to the doctors the pain was so bad I was in tears, the Gabapentin helps but the pain is still there but not as bad obviously. I don't know what the cause is, I've looked on the internet and all they refer to is kidney stones and gyny problems which don't apply. I have stenosis in my lower back with referred pain to my hip but I don't think that is the cause of the pain in my groin. Hey ho! onwards and upwards. Take care. Love Lizzy x

RibvanRey profile image
RibvanRey in reply to skinnylizzy59

A stenosis could put pressure on the nerves to the groin, causing pain there. If you look at Wikipedia for Spinal Stenosis it will show you how the nerve gets pinched. Rib

Hi RibvanRey, thank you so much for that information, I'll have a look as soon as possible. Take care, Lizzy.

Hi Ruby. I take Gabapentin for spine problems and sciatica. 300mg three times per day. It stops the awful pins and needles I get, especially at night. I find it great. It was given to me by the pain clinic and they told me it would act as a nerve block. Glad it works for you as well. Take care.

Have a good day

Yup, me too. Have been taking it for over a year Ruby and so far no side effects touch wood. You have a good day too. Don't envy you your 38 degrees. Prefer our cold. Saying that I lived in Canada for many years and acclimatised to the heat after the first year.

Take care. Sara xxx

Hi Ruby, pain management clinic prescribed Gabapentin for nerve ending pain in the spinal area. Didn't seem to tolerate it well, ie nausea. Have recently been prescribed Pregabalin and so far all ok xxx

rubyred777 profile image
rubyred777 in reply to

They are similar. I believe pregabalin is alot more expensive. Right? Glad its working for you.

Rubyxx :-)

I'm sure that's the case Ruby. Think docs prescribe Gabapentin first in the hope that it can be tolerated ...

Hi, I take 3x300 per day of Gabapentin and am allowed to take two more if required, I take it for nerve damage due to Polio as a child that came back as Post Polio. It has killed the neurons I regrew after rehab aged 3-.5, but in some of us Polio never went away. It allows me to stand up for 3-5 mins at a time and inbetween spinal injections, at St Thomas every 5 months. I find it works very well. xxx
