Anything help in this cold air?

Just wondering if anyone has any good suggestions for dealing with the really cold air? Just getting to the car is proving difficult when it's so cold. Have scarf wrapped round but doesn't seem to help much. Anybody have any solutions as I don't fancy being trapped indoors till the spring!

It takes my breath away, RibvanRey so breathing is extremely difficult.

I didn't know if you meant the cold air, the cold of oxygen, or general cold. I wear a snood because it is easy to pull up over the face and oxygen when outside but easy to pull down around the neck when in a shop. I add a scarf over the top if it is really bad. Wind of -6 C the other day. Thermalatic wooly hat too. As with all cold clothing, layers work best. Regards Rib

Oh I don't know Nanny as I have always gone with the scarf idea. Do you wrap it round your nose as well as your mouth? Have you tried a fluffy one and not wrapping it too tightly so the air can be warmed then circulated?

I am sure people will be in soon with lots of advice. x

Thanks, coughalot. Think I need to perfect my technique of wrapping! Makes sense to cover my nose too! How stupid not to have thought of that but never had such a problem in previous winters.

First thing Is to ensure you breath in through your nose and out through your mouth. That way, your nose warms the air before it hits your throat and the tiny hairs in your nose filters out dust and bugs. There are a lot of tiny blood vessels in your nose to warm the air up....like a radiator fixed to the middle of yer face.

The other problem can be exhaust fumes....they tend to hang about in cold air more that warm air, so yes, the snood pulled over your nose is a good way but if you have a couple of quid to spare, pop along to Halfords....they sell a cyclists city mask....designed just for the purpose of exhausts, dusts, bugs and when warmer, pollen. The masks have a replaceable filter, too.

Hi nanny when it really cold weather I put on a cold weather mask which let's you breathe without any cold air in to mouth or nose bit pricey but washable but worth every penny I have had mine for three years just type in cold weather mask

Have been looking at those today on line, jimmy. Thanks for taking the trouble to respond. Read good reviews about them but wonder sometimes if they're written by the sellers! Good to hear a truly independent view and will look again tomorrow. The ones I was looking at we're about £25 I think and hooked over ears. I thought I could wear a scarf over the top so as not to scare the grand kids! Would that work do you think?

They are not my favourite type. I do prefer the snood. They are just like the type that Jimmy G described. I would imagine that they would be very warm. Our Aldi had all sorts of colours too yesterday. My carer took a couple of photos of them to show me. Good hunting. Rib

No - couldn't find them either. Going to try Halfords for a cyclist mask and order the cold weather mask on line I think. Thick frost here today and will have to get my daughter to get me something. Can't be stuck indoors indefinitely - I'll go stir crazy!!

than a grandma......

Looking at snoods. Not expensive

and plenty to choose from.

Ha ha!! My initial thoughts exactly, but having ventured out to put some rubbish in the bin (no more than 10 paces) have decided that vanity will have to take a back seat! Will get a snood to cover up the mask - just hope no-one tries to engage me in conversation!!

My recommendation is a snood, a sort of circular scarf that you pull on over your head and can wear doubled around your neck or else pulled up around your face, covering your mouth completely, right up to under your eyes. They are solid enough that they won't collapse and they stand firm however you decide to wear them. Mine is smooth fleece on one side and sort of furry-like fleece on the other. It's my best friend and most favoured posession at this time of year. I had it on, pulled up to nose level while I was out this afternoon and am still wearing it now around my neck. So warm and cosy, better then a hot water bottle.

Thanks, Argana. I have a snood but it's floppy so pretty near useless. Think I'll try the cold air weather mask jimmy recommends and wear a snood over the top so as not to look too scary!! Can you remember where you got yours? Think I've seen something similar- Marks, Milletts?

I agree with the idea to cover your nose and mouth with a scarf but don't have it too tight as the warm air needs to circulate. Good luck!

Yes aldi have them it are they the same material as the dearer ones and are they washable as I said I have had mine for three years still like new

I am the same but I put my scarf around my face so it is warmer air I breath in it helps a little. But it can feel like I have been cut me in half once we go below 3c

Strangely enough it has been raining over night here

like most I wear a snood plus a scarf if it is really cold the ideal thing about the snood is that you can full it down when in the bank or shops that request helmets etc not to be worn

Just had another look as I was looking at the original buff. Can't tell from the pictures and description, flibberti, but can the hood buff be used to cover the nose and mouth? From all the advice I've received, that would seem to be key.

Thanks, Anthony. Lots of practical advice being received - all very welcome. Like you say, all well and good being wrapped up but just occasionally need to make verbal contact with someone whilst out and about!! Snood seems the way to go, but will double up with something else I think. Still considering the many options others have suggested.

I bought one of these last year not properly tested yet as I wasn't out in the really cold weather, however might be worthwhile looking online (Amazon) and here ere 2 sites worth looking at as you can get a mask and balaclava for less than £4.00 the sites are Just copy and paste each to your browser you should get them by Xmas or early new year for the really bad weather
