Getting frustrated and confused by what's happening.

I Started with no voice on Monday, ended up in A&E on Wednesday (sent by GP because they were about to close). Thursday the cough started and now it won't stop - have had less than five hours sleep since Thursday. I am on antibiotics and steroids but now coughing up lots of yellow/green phlegm but my chest is clear - other half used to be a medic and says he can't hear anything.

Really don't know what to do or even what's going on. Have to go back to work on Monday to prep students for exams but today have only just managed to do the shopping. Scared to speak to the out of hours because I don't want to be seen as some neurotic woman and I don't suppose there is anything more to do.

Please has anybody got any tips for how I might get some sleep or even stop the cough a little :-(

Hi Karen.

How R U today?

My suggestions. Are sleeping a bit upright. Or when running a bath allowing. The steam to help clear mucus.lots of fluids and rest.

Then perhaps Monday if U still feel unwell. Ask ur doctor for a few days sick note.

Or try maybe some cough syrup

Do U have inhalers?

You must give the antibiotics. And steroids a chance to work .

Hope I've helped ?

X

Hi Tigger and thank you for replying. Much the same really. I have been propping myself up at night and drinking loads. Rest is not something I do easily ...and frequently get told off for. I saw the pharmacist at local Sainsburys last night and his words were 'you just have to live with the cough' or go on a cruise! Which ones are best?

I am on serevent 100 but have been told to take two puffs twice a day and ventolin when needed. None of that seems to be helping and I am remembering to drink water after taking it because I read about the inhalers giving you a slightly sore throat.

Just want normal!! But thanks again your comments did help. x

Honey in a little hot water sometimes helps my husband. There are such a lot of nasty bugs this year. My husband has had a strange voice thing going on for over a week more like two. Hope you get some sleep tonight, take care TAD xxx

Hello Karen2, sorry you are not well there a lot of bugs going round just now. As you have been assured your chest sounds clear I would presume a throat infection or cold a tried and tested relieve for that is an hot whisky toddy i.e, an hot drink with a large tot of whisky and some honey. You can get miniature whisky at the outdoor. Herbal tea with honey and brown sugar helps too. Hope you feel better soon and get a good nights sleep tonight.Take care xx

Whiskey a lovely idea right now, but a definite no no ... major interaction with other meds! Will try the herbal tea, honey and brown sugar.

thanks Katieoxo60 xx

I too have been suffering a similar experience. I am on steroids and antibiotics 5 inhalers and mucadyne to help loosen the mucus and still struggling. Honey and Lemon and hot water. Definitely stay off the alcohol from my bitter experience. Hope you get well soon.

Hey, Karen You are not a neurotic woman, you just want to know, which is absolutely normal. You can phone 111 and always say that you will be fine, after their call . It's not a bad thing to ring them, they'll be impartial in listening to you. You might even see another doctor. Do prepare yourself with your medical history and how come you have felt how you do now, when did it start and so on. But they will be thorough and listen. Be confident to find out about what's bugging you. it's better to be treated if you need it. Take courage, Mic

Hi Karen2 - I am someone who suffered the same as you - coughing which stopped me sleeping, so was only getting 2-3 hours sleep a night. I think I have found the answer BOOTS NIGHT COUGH MIXTURE. It says for tickly coughs but it works for me, but not to take at the same time if you have taken Paracetomol. Then have a good coughing clear out in the morning My other daytime rescue is Fisherman's Friends lozengers (horrible taste but do the job). Hope you get a good nights sleep soon. Best wishes Judydorney

Thank you all so much, you don't know how much your support means. July, I will be off to Boots after school tomorrow. Trying honey and lemon again tonight and really hoping that I get some sleep tonight got a busy day tomorrow. If things don't get any better I will just have to fight the receptionist to see a doctor. Night all x
