Hi squirell,

I didn't know the name either but turns out its the brand name for aminophylline which has been around for ages. Its used to treat reversible lung conditions and copd - I had it in hospital for asthma in my 20s, didn't work! It has to be monitored carefully for problematic side effects but works very well for some people.

Edit: sorry squirrel: think I'm making a mess of this. It IS used for copd as well and in fact Farmer D mentions it working for him below.

Ive removed that link as it was for ampules, not tablets, though clinical effect i assume would be similar.

So sorry, I'm a bit off form at the minute due to nasty exacerbation - well that's my excuse ;) Hope this works well for you anyway.

How do you edit your posts as I have wanted to do that in the past but have never found a way to do it?

Thanks

Look to the right of "Recommend" at bottom of post, there's a little arrow. Click on it and it will give you the option. Just click on "edit" and the post will reappear in new box so you can make your alterations.

Then click in the orange box which will now say something like "edit reply" :)

Hi squirell nice to meet you.Yes Ive been on these for 15 odd years without any problems fortunately.I was prescribed them as I was having lots of bronchospasms, they help to relax your airways and help with inflamation,For people suffering a bad asthma attack very often have an injection of this to help open up their airways more quickly. It is a fairly toxic drug the correct dose is close to the toxic dose which is why we have to have regular blood tests. For some like my daughter suffer rotten side effects.Ive never had a problem and it has been beneficial . Hope this helps takecare now :) Janexx

Hi long lungs, is this drug similar to Uniphyllin, I have been taking 2 x 400mg of Uniphyllin per day for a few years now and to be fair Im not sure If they help or not, just wondered x Carol xx

Hi carol as far as I understand they are both,Xanthine Bronchodilators, which help to relax and open up the airways.Again they are toxic so blood tests are needed to check the levels are okay.I remember reading somewhere that if you smoke whilst taking this it lessons the effect and a stronger dose might be needed so necessary to let the doc know if a smoker?

I dont notice anything in particular with my breathing but its fairly rare for me to suffer bronchospasms anymore so I shall always continue to take, those spasms are very scary mary and the reason I was prescribed them.Maybe carol if you didnt take you might suffer more with tightening of your airways ?

Im not qualified so to clarify would be best to contact eitherBLF or your doctor me thinks.

Hope that helps :) Janexx

I've been taking them for ages. I forgot what they were for. :)

I don't have blood tests for them or get any side effects. In fact the only side effects I get from any of my medicines is thin and easily bruised skin. :)

Was prescribed them a month ago. Was my own fault, I asked my consultant for them after hearing about Aminophylline (their real name) on a FB page I'm a member of. I was restless, couldn't settle, nauseous and my heart rate went up by 20 bpm. No noticeable effect on my breathing. Came off after 36 hours and the've been banished to the cupboard. If you take them it may be an idea to use an oxymeter to check your heart rate before and after. Luck...

Hello Squirrel, this is an interesting one for me.Two years ago my consultant put me on aminophyline to help with breathlessness,it did,nt seem to have any effect. We noticed my heart rate was rather high,120/130, so we stopped them but that did,nt make any change to heart rate.Recently been referred to the BROMPTON where new consultant put me back on them. The difference is amazing,I always struggle with breathing when comming off steroids but not this time.I can walk further and am a lot more relaxed.I assume it,s down to the specific stage ones lungs are at as to what affect aminophyline has.So I have gone from thinking they are useless to thinking they,re brilliant.Hope this is of some help.Good luck. D.
