Shingles

I have shingles at the moment and am feeling dreadful. Can anyone out there tell me how long it is likely to last. The trouble is that because I feel so rotten it has made me feel so depressed as well. Doesn't time drag when you feel rotten?!!!!!

You poor thing! My Dad had them and a couple of my friends have had them.....when Dad had them it took ages for him to get better, but my friends had some medicine which seemed to really help them (this is 20 years later than when Dad had them) so hopefully, you will get some relief soon. I do know how it feels to be in pain for a long time...just got over being immobilised with pain for about 8 weeks, which REALLY got me very down....I send you my very best wishes and hope that you feel better soon. ....let us know how you get on :)

Hi Huge sympathies ...I had shingles back in Feb ...the most painful thing ever! I imagine it is different for different people ..I was still in quite a lot of pain 6 weeks in ...I found wearing tight vests a help, especially at night as 'light touches' were agony and just feeling the duvet moving against my skin was awful. My GP says i have some possibly permanent damage, no pain no, but a couple of itchy areas and still a bit sensitive and continue to wear vest at night ....Some people are much less affected, fingers crossed, take pain killers (red wine worked quite well!) and one day at a time ...it will get better.

All the best

Thanks a lot. I am feeling a lot happier already having got it out of my system but it is just the continual pain. I take pain killers but they don't seem to do much.

How long have you been taking this pain relief? Different analgesia takes different lengths of time to work fully. Do you mind my asking what you were prescribed? Regards Rib

Hi ...I wasn't prescribed any ...I used to take occasional Ibuprofen and co-codomol ..I don't think they had any other than a placebo effect ...the tight clothing was the best I could do and at times in the first few weeks the pain was beyond shocking ... I (and most , and you too lovey) had to bear it ... was put on part time at work and sometimes had to stop driving when I knew the pain was coming in ....not much comfort I know ...sorry !!! ... day by day ...it's not for ever ... you will be better ...keep your immune system topped up .. eat good etc, it can't make things worse ...... keep going ...it will be over eventually XX

That's awful. A friend of mine has it now but it is not very severe. I am sure she was prescribed stronger painkillers by a doctor. I would go back and try and get some. x

That's awful I know how hubby was when he had them, can last quite a while too unfortunately.

The best relief, was a capsicame cream, really calmed it down.Thats probably the wrong spelling! Anyhow the Doctor will know,I think you can only get it on prescription, but it was wonderful.

Take care xx

PS. Type in shingles in the search box,& you will find info there! xx

Hi.......take a daily Multi B. Vitamin ......I found the after effects of the initial outbreak eased off quickley.

No left over pain & discomfort months later.

Its an old fashioned remedy.
