Hi

Your six minute walk test, will include no oxygen, then oxygen set at different levels until the nurse is satisfied.

If you are told you require Ambultory oxygen, for exercise and moving around. They take you through the options demending on you needs.

As there is plenty of time discuss whether you need contious flow or pulse.

Equipment

Thera are cylinders.

Liquid oxygen.

Portable oxygen concentrator

Discuss the pro and cons for each available system in your area

Once you have agreed a suitable system, the nurse will contact the oxygen provider for your area and arrange delivery.

And remember it is only a extra medication.

They should take blood gas levels. They usually give an accurate account of the levels of oxygen, carbon dioxide, acid/alkaline levels, etc, in the blood. I am on oxygen and I'd rather be put on it going by blood gases then the 6 minute walk test. This is just my personal preference though.

Yes Puff, the technicians I see are very thorough so I have every faith,it,s them I asked to display my Healthunlocked poster.I,ll find out tomorrow if the boss decided to have it put in the display cabinet.D.

Good luck FarmerD, I know absolutely nothing about oxygen assessment. Just want to wish you good luck. Tomorrow. Glad you have an appointment with the Consultant. Take a pen and notebook tomorrow in case you have questions for your Consultant next week. I always take my son when I attend Hospital working on two heads are better than one.

Hi, you should also get the telephone number of the clinic. My local hosp COPD clinic is very good. They give every patient their direct dial number so they can ring the clinic and talk to the specialist staff if they are worried about something or forget what advise they were given. You should ask if your hosp clinic works the same.

I have my assessment today at 1.30. Not looking forward to it, up to 3 hours the hospital letter says but it does not explain any of the procedure but I will let you know how it goes, good luck with yours.

Cheers FarmerD, I am in the same boat with the walking and have a blood oxygen count of 79; but my GP refused to put me on steriods ? Even refused to send me to see a consultant for 7 months until a nurse from lung rehab' wrote to him insisting I see a specialist. So much for NICE guide lines. Will post my results and I will keep you in mind this afternoon. Good luck.

Hi

Oxygen either LTOT, or Ambulatory , is given to protect vital organs , it will not always benefit you shortness of breath, if your sats are often below 88% , you are putting you self at risk from organ failure.

If your are struggling with your equipment speak to your oxygen team, and try and seak a alternative,

They put their oxymeter up 4 notches ,so you gotta be pretty low,I am in the 79-86 when I walk ,I can't go anywhere, but their machine was 4 more 89-90 so that's ok she said,it's not what hospital goes by,anyway then she showed me a tank that I could not pick up it was like carry a sack of coal around with you, she said I could use a trolley, but I still had to lift it ,the other one was smaller liquid oxygen ,but I would have to have a shed or garage to store a tank in,and fill it myself.....WELL,all I want to do is walk along the beach and go over the ferry,at moment I cannot go anywhere for 2yrs now, I could notcope with either to dangerous and heavy for me ,I'm ok indoors, walking I cannot walk far ,so I don't know ,we have to keep our options open as there maybe somthing suitable! What's this about area? Some better than others?

It,s does seem a bit daft ,we find it hard to lug ourselves about so they add a lump of weight to "help"?D.

Well it was OK, the nurse took blood from my earlobe to test, then several finger oxymetre readings, lots of questions about my medical history then the result.

They are bringing the oxygen machine and 4 x 3 ltr portable bottles in the morning. I need 2 ltr per hour sitting, 4 ltr per hour moving around, will be reviewed in 4 weeks. Will not help with the SOB but will keep my blood oxygen levels up at an acceptable level until the consultant finishes all his tests to determine what's exactly wrong with me.

Made a mistake, it's not per hour it's per minute. All delivered this morning and set up for me. He even explained about the refund on electricity we will get every 6 months so now I'm on oxygen I only hope it isn't a permanant feature in my life.
