My husband has just started ambulatory oxygen for emphysema. Can anyone recommend a better carrying bag, he doesn't want one on wheels.

He is still getting used to the idea he needs oxygen so I am trying to make it as convenient as possible. Thankyou

Hi

The options are limited, the bag can be used like a back pack " rather heavy" the trolleys arn't to bad.

Would he not prefer liquid oxygen if suitable . Share your concerns with your respitory nurse, they may well have a solution.

Just rember it is only another medicine.

Thanks, I have looked at the info and it does look like it would be better. He has been given a conserved but not sure it will work because he mouth breathes a lot and it doesn't seem to be cutting in

Hi

Conservers will not work with mouth breathing , I would speak to your respitory nurse, to find a solution , continuouse flow is fine if you only mouth breath occasionally , but you use twice the amount of oxygen.

Thanks I think he has been breathless so long because he won't stop what he is doing until he can't go on so he has been mouth breathing to get more air in. Hopefully he will manage nose breathing when he is less breathless with oxygen!

have a look on youtube, put in Dr Noah Greenspan, he runs the New York Wellbeing Centre. He has a number of videos, 1 or 2 of which give excellent advice on breathing techniques. Again like your husband I was hard headed and would not give in until I was on my knees but he is not doIng himself any favours, and could be damaging his heart.

I wear mine on my back just like an ordinary small rucksack and it doesn't really bother me. When I'm wearing it in the high street, no one bats an eyelid. No odd looks, no staring. Am I that boring !! :)

Hi ,I was totally unimpressed with the carrying bag to, its not only so conspicuous, its annoying to use. I have bought a shoulder bag, the sort of thing the old hippies used to carry, but much quieter no bright colours. the bag is just big enough to hold the bottle diagonally across it. When I am carrying it I pull just enough air line out to reach from the bag to my mouth and I thread the air line under the shoulder strap so it can not be seen. Only the cannula is visible. This set up works even better if your using pules oxygen as once you have set your pressure up you don't have to keep switching the O2 on or off to adjust the flow rate.

I hope thats helpful, I didn't like the idea at all when I was first told I needed to use O2 to get about but soon got use to it having given myself a good talking to. I could feel sorry for myself hid away and make life difficult, unpleasant and limited for everyone caring for me or say sod it its nothing to be ashamed of and enjoy life.

All the best.
