Dentists and Copd patients.

After starting steroids a couple of my fillings fell out so I need to see a dentist.The thought of stuff in my mouth worries me.Are dentists aware of our problems?Is it wiser to try and be referred to a hospital dentist has any one experience of this?D.

My husband has had a lot of work done by the dentist but we did make him aware of the COPD and how severe it is - better to tell the dentist and make sure they know what medication you are on. TAD xx

Hi farmerD, your dentist needs to know if you are on steroids ...I have to fill in a form every year stating my medications and illnesses. In the past I have had root canal work and an extraction, but that had to be done at the dental hospital. Have you rung the BLF helpline and a dentist to ask their advice. Take care

I had tooth extractions. I thought my dentist was aware of my condition, all medication had been noted and I am on oxygen. However, two days after the extraction I was admitted to hospital with pneumonia. Doctors said I should have antibiotics before I had this done. I was very ill for a long time, and afraid to go back to the dentist even though I really need to.

yes your dentist should be made aware of your condition and your medicines and they have all received a notice regarding steroids and alendronic acid concerns and as far as these go they will ask the local hospital to do an extraction or the hospital will give the dentist permission to do it depending on the circumstances,

I visit the dentist quite regularly for check-ups and sometimes treatment, in fact I went just this morning and I had to fill in a form yet again. It seems that they want to keep all their records up to date so I seem to fill in a form everytime I visit. They want to know all about your health and what medications you are taking. My dentist went through the form with me to make sure she understood everything. So don't worry, it could be the same at your dentist. Take care. Lizzy.

I forgot to say FarmerD, that I have severe bronchiecstasis and am on loads of medication and I am in fear and trembling if I have to have treatment, a check-up isn't too bad especially when it's good news that nothing needs doing. If you haven't got a dentist, ask around to find someone who is sympathetic. Take care. Lizzy.
