Hi the question I need answered, is a bullea always as a result of severe emphysema only, I am seeing a consultant in a couple of weeks but want to know the facts so I can ask the right questions, my gp freaked me out by putting me on the 2 week pathway without telling me ( this is when they suspect lung cancer) but consultant put me back to four weeks as I did not fit the criteria what ever that is,

That is a goog question .. To be honest i have put minedown to asbestos snd over working my lungs i.e heavy manual work inflating deflating my lungs to max.

Proves hard work can make you ill ... But my new gp thinks its all the drink and drugs none of whitch i do.

My understanding is you get emphysema then you get honey combing threw weakened lung structures i.e holes forming.

That they now call emphysematous changes AS thay dont use honey combing to describe it as its tad grim BUT all the matrial that you cough up and is lose that you dont cough up flouts round you lung and makes its way to your liver or gland just b4 liver .. Thats why we get infections weakend.

As to bullea the just like blisters from destruction of lung tissue and over breathing infections coughing and sticky sputom can cause them also bullae are filled with air and some are filled with plaura fluid thats why you get plaurasy as your holes bullea must be full of juice .. The other way is if holes bullea are white means infected to the max and to be honest depending on life style work history and even radiation anything in my opian can cause it.

Dont think 7cm bullae is any reason to be put on plaintive care plans .. i have multiple bullea at edges of both lungs.

Are you on oxygen and i would ask them to be strait with you and ask why you have been placed on it.

Also if docs dont want to your local health commissioning group authority will tell you if you write to them

I'm not on oxygen, only slightly out of breath in fact never really noticed a problem till getting x ray results, I'm not a smoker and do not cough up anything, history of Bronchitis in the past, do you know if a bullar is only found in severe cases of emphysema, thanks for your reply

Even healthy people can have bullea .. But i think your bronchitis and emphysema is playing a part in your now condition your doc might of thought consoladition on xray was cancer but consoladion can be infection or bactriea lung abces

Hi, I got diagnosed with very early onset emphysema end of January after being admitted to hospital with a collapsed lung. They made the diagnosis after I had a ct scan which also showed several bullea (air filled cysts) on the edges of my lungs. I ended up needing a operation to remove the bullea and also to stick the lung to the chest wall. I never had any symptoms and was running three times a week until this happened. I had never even heard of bullea until now. My respiratory consultant has said that the bullea is a result of the emphysema.

Thank you sar10 you answered my question that a Bullea can be with early rather than severe emphysema, although at 7cm mine is not small but it is the only one I have.... Thank you so much to both of you, have an appointment to see consultant on the 12th so keeping fingers crossed that it is mild and no sign of cancer

I will also keep fingers crossed for you. I know exactly how your feeling and it doesn't matter how much everyone tells you not to worry- you still do and will do until you have seen consultant. Good luck.x

Thank you, fingers crossed it's not cancer, but have decided to report my doctor as he did not inform me that I was on the 2 week pathway and that he suspected cancer, do not want him to do this to someone else

Hi Lynisa I had a Bullae that covered 50% of my right lung and stopped the whole lung from working this was in 2005 I had a Bolectomy at the end of 2005 where they removed the whole bullae, this was at Guy's in Dorcas Ward they were absolutely fantastic. I felt so much better within 3 months, unfortunately I already had the start of Emphysema and I now only have a transfer rate of oxygen from lungs to bloodstream of 25%, I am still working and it really is a case of use it or lose it. I hope this can reassure you as you can still life you life.
