Hello folks, does anyone know where an I-neb can be bought or is it only through recommendation from GP or other health professional?

Do you want it for nebulising colomycin sirjames? cx

Thanks for quick reply C. not sure but I have colonised Pseudomonas and from what COPD nurse said, if the ciproflaxin I've just started taking doesn't work, then nebulised antibiotics is the next option.

Oh I'm sorry you are colonised with pseudo and are struggling at present. I do hope the cipro works. I am a weirdo when it comes to intolerances - the worst my con has apparently and cannot tolerate cipro. Personally I am colonised with HI and have already nebulised colomycin (which I can't tolerate - put me in hospital). ((but like I say I am a bit odd)) Looks like I will be nebulusing Tobramycin next, although I have told them I am not going to until after my holiday, which they thought was reasonable.

Reason why I asked if you were going to neb colomycin is the Ineb is very very expensive and is used for colomycin, but if your GP agrees to prescribe a certain make of colomycin which is slightly more expensive, they give you the Ineb free. Forget the name of the drug but a pal who is a member here but not posting at present has used it and it takes about 4 minutes. When you have your trial period the nebuliser they give you will be the normal neb from the equipment pool and it takes a while to neb. So I really hope the cipro works for you hun. Still if we have to neb abs, so be it if it helps to cut down the infections.

Just a note hun - watch out for any tendonitis when taking cipro.

Hope you are feeling better soon.

Love cx

When nebulising antibiotics you need to have a special type of nebuliser cup - container for the liquid. Antibiotic nebs are much thicker than saline or ventolin nebs and produce a larger spray size hence the special nebuliser. Cofdrop has already explained about the ineb cost and uses.

Because of this I would be careful before spending a lot of money on a nebuliser yourself. The one you get free from your hospital will do the job and you have the added advantage that it will be serviced and you will get replacement cups every 6months. Generally the cheap ones you can buy are only suitable for ventolin and saline.

I am heavily colonised with pseudamonas and kept it at bay for many years with ciprofloxacin. Now I nebulise gentamicin twice a day. I found it frustrating at first, the time taken out of my day, but now it is just a part of my routine, like brushing teeth. If your consultant offers nebulised abs I would take them sooner rather than put it off. I kept saying 'I'm not ready for that step' and I believe I caused myself future problems.

I should also say that they may pop you into hospital for a quick course of I V abs if cipro doesn't work. Nebulised abs are a long term alternative to oral abs, once you are on them, you are on them. If this is just a stuborn bug IV would be an answer.

sirjames, I think it's better to involve your doctor or even be referred to your consultant and a respiratory nurse team. The NHS usually will bear the cost. I have had colomycin, but now my consultant gives me other drugs. There are nebulised antibiotics like tobramycin, which requires monitoring because it could affect the kidneys. Best to talk to your consultant. I hope you get attention soon.

Thanks to you all for the replies and much appreciated. I will be guided by the nurse from the local COPD team if it is decided I need nebulised antibiotics.
