Has anybody used Champix to stop smoking ? I am thinking about giving it a go but I've heard it can have some serious side effects, if so do these side effects go in time ?

Hi PeterK1, I have been using Champix since October and can only sing their praises - I never thought that I would give up ciggies ( heavy smoker for more years than I care to remember!). In the beginning I had some very vivid dreams which is quite common I believe but other than that I have been fine. If you suffer from depression they won't be prescribed and I do know others on here that have had varying problems. Good Luck :) Julie x

Dear Peter

I have no idea if Champix is good or not, but I can only implore you to do WHATEVER it takes, to stop smoking, even if you have to tape your mouth up ( sorry not meant as a flippant reply) but dear Peter you HAVE to stop, you will be so happy when you have stopped, its the single most best thing you can do for your health

Use anything and EVERYTHING that helps you to stop, just please stop

Good luck with the Champix or whatever you try,

Do this for yourself Peter, when this tough part of stopping is over, you will be 100% happy that you no longer smoke

I will be hoping you make it

Love Sohara

I and my husband started onChampix two years ago. You can smoke for the first two weeks while you are taking them. By the time the two weeks were up we had both stopped smoking. You take the tablets for three months and during this time my husband took a bad bout of the runs so he had to stop the tablets. In the end I finished with the course earlier than I should have and I have never had another cigarette. So come next month I've been fag free for two years and I can't tell you how proud I am. I could never have done cold turkey so I say thank you to the no smoking clinic at the hospital and Champix. Sadly my husband fell off the wagon so maybe one day he'll try again. So after my life story to get back with an answer for you I did not suffer any side effects I wish you well every success in packing the smelly things. Good luck xxx

well Thank you for the replies, I will keep you informed on my progress

Hi PeterK1

Being a 60+ a day smoker for over 40 years and having tried to stop smoking using various products and failing each time I decided to give Champix a try. Despite friends taking bets that I would be smoking again after a short while I can proudly say it is now 5 and a half years since I stopped and other than the odd occasion have never even thought about starting again, the only problem is I cannot stand the smell of smoke. I did not have any side effects but everyone is different.

Good luck with your effort to stop, it is well worth not only on the health side but it also helps the bank balance.

Never used it myself, but anything that helps you break the habit is worth trying! Good on you for thinking about giving up, as that's the first step on the journey of being smoke free :)

I took champix it made me very I'll and I almost died. My liver decided it did not like it. GP sent me to the hospital did not think it was the champion, I had test after test over a 3month period and could not find anything wrong. It did stop me smoking but only took it for 2 weeks. Consultant did admit in the end that it was the champix and would have to report it. It has taken me over a year to fell well the sickness was the worst thing and of course I lost a lot of weight as I could not eat and I was very yellow for about 4 months. Yes it stops you smoking but beware, I was given it at a stop smoking clinic with no medical at that point I had not seen my GP in 9 years. Over the passed two years go every 3 months for blood tests on liver. The worst thing about all of this is my Mother died from liver cancer so you can imagine what I was thinking. So please be careful .

Had smoked 48 years.Quit with champix in November after copd diagnosis. Side effects fairly mild 2 weird dreams .some nausea feeling lasting 2/3 hours during week 3 as you go on to higher dose. Always eat before tablet .Biggest side effect has been getting rid of persistent cough (day and night) and 3 years of chest infections. Cough went on day 3 of quit! !!! and dont want it back. Had tried previously using NRT but it just seemed to feed nicotine adiction . Still think about ciggies as they had always been part of my adult life but dont want them back. Know every one is different but I personally feel healthier than I have in years . I am 63 . Hope you give it a go and good luck.

I am taking it at the moment. Few weird dreams to start with but that was worth it to be able to breath and play with the grandkids. Can be a bit hard on the stomach but if you read the instructions and take it just after a meal with a drink, it's fine for most folk.

Well the stop smoking rang yesterday, will see me Saturday morning about starting on the Champix, fingers crossed.

I really have to do something, I only got half way up the stairs this morning and I was contemplating setting up base camp.

Hi Peter, good luck with the Champix, as I said earlier in the post I have had very few side effects - just don't take it on an empty stomach - and for the first winter I can remember I haven't coughed all the way through it! The Alan Carr book is also a good read - he just puts things in perspective and I found his comments/arguments really helpful to deal with the 'habit' cravings, you know the ones - talking on the phone, after a meal etc.

Let us know how you are getting on won't you? Julie x

Totally agree with everything jools says .I read the original Allen Carr book "Easy way to stop smoking "alongside champix. It makes you see smoking in a totally new light . There are some free Allen Carr clips on U Tube which give a good insight into his "easy way" .I was originally keen on champix as you are allowed to smoke for the fist 2 weeks of treatment so it didn't seem such a daunting task. Best of luck .
