Mucus in throat

Hi everyone, I seem to have mucus in my throat all the time and cannot always shift it by coughing. My question is, are there any medication I can take to clear this, I am for ever trying to clear my throat. I see my consultant today so I could ask him for something, any ideas greatly appreciated.

If your seeing your consultant mention it to him. Good luck jan.

Hi Titch, I have the same problem with my IPF and until I can clear the mucus I just carry on coughing. Water doesn't seem to help at all but sometimes a cup of tea seems to do the trick. The consultant has said I can have a flutter to try on the NHS but my appointment isn't until March. The wheels grind very slowly don't they? I will send a post when I have it and tell you how I go on with it. Popplewell

Hi Jan, I also suffer from this troublesome condition and my consultant has prescribed Mucodyne, this seems to work reasonably well. I also find Jakeman's Honey & Lemon 'sweets' very effective (available from Boots etc.) Hope this helps, Kind regards, Howard

hi hfarthing, I swear by Jakeman's throat and cough 'sweets', the black ones. I buy them by the jar full from Amazon. I've even recommended them to my consultant.

Try gargling with warm salt water.

I have Mucodyne and also a Flutter. Both seem to do the job ok. I also carry around a packet of strong Halls sweets in the black wrapper. They are more expensive than the normal ones but pack a punch !

Try olbas inhalation. Also there is a huff and ouff exercise which I learnt at PR. xx

My husband suffers from the same problem. He was given a flutter by his GP and it works amazingly. He also steams with Olbas oil but hasn't had to do that much since he got the flutter. I'd advise you to ask for one.

I suffer similarly. My Dr says it's part and part of life. Basically it's more than likely to be Catarrh. The best answer is to use an inhalent of some type. Maybe menthol or even just good old hot water with a towel over your head.
