Have you tried a sleep hygiene routine? Our bodies find sleep tricky if we sleep during the day time- so perhaps a new routine, try not sleeping during the day and see if your nights improve? To stop me sleeping during the day I keep busyish- eg. not lying down on the sofa or going to bed and that keeps the nights much better. Sleep hygiene info can be found on the internet and can make a big difference. Good Luck :-)

I agree with Polly. If you deprive yourself sleep during the day, you'll be more inclined to sleep during the night. At night, you may have to take something like Kalm to calm your functions and your brain! I used a CD to try to get to sleep.

Can you do some exercises during the day? Even if your energy is low, a little bit of movement helps.

Yes I agree with helingmic, if you can do even some minor exercises, wrist rotations, ankle rotations, a walk around the room or further every hour then you will oxygenate and energise the body. There are many exercises which can be done from sitting and which can help loads. There is a good DVD from Amazon, called COPD, Functional Fitness. Let us know how you get on.

Sorry to hear you are not sleeping . I understand how you feel. I am exactly the same since having three weeks in hospital with pneumonia a year ago. I have tried staying awake all day but I still only sleep for about an hour at a time. I'm quite relaxed not worried about anything. Lately Ive not been going to bed until one or two am and find this slightly better but feel shattered getting up at 8 am so that the carers can shower me. This doesn't make you feel any better does it? I think there are more insomniacs out there than we think.

My husband has had very strange sleeping patterns since his COPD diagnosis - dependent on whether he is on antibiotics and/or steroids tablets can make a huge difference. He was on steroids last week and hardly slept a wink! I think it is very difficult to push your body back into a sleeping routine. Cut out coffee would be my best suggestion! Talk to your gp though. Since my spell in ICU in 2008 I have not slept though a night. For over a year after this once I woke no matter what the time was I had to get out of my bed! I can be sitting waiting to watch a programme and if I have been out shopping etc. I will just drop off for an hour and miss it

I wake at all sorts of times and sometimes wake gasping for breath. I am having a Sleep Apnoea test on the 21st.

Hi Becraftygirl, I have the same problems, I go to bed wanting to just lay down and sleep but I can't and I lie awake watching the clock until I think it's O.K. to get up for a cup of tea, stay up about an hour then go back to bed and sleep perhaps and hour or maybe two then awake again, go to the loo, back to bed to sleep for another hour or so and so it goes on through the night but sometimes I just can't sleep at all until about 4.00 a.m. then I have broken sleep until it's time to get up when, of course, I am fast asleep! I've tried staying awake during the day but I felt ill I was so tired so I just had to give in. I toss and turn and get myself into a frightening mental state with things buzzing in my head, I wish there was an easy answer. Take care and good luck. Lizzy.

I'm the same. But then I was always a night person. Studies have also shown that COPD patients are at their worse in the morning. I tend to go to sleep when the breathing is bad and stay up when it's better.

I am currently on steroids and antibiotics. Very tired but restless and sort of wired up feeling. Is it the steroids? Presnilodene.

Hi there, yes it will likely be the Prednisolone, sometimes they affect me like that, which by the way, I quite like- makes me feel so well, but haha, it is only chemically induced and will fade as my health returns to its normal state!

like having drunk several cups of espresso BigB & Polly?

It's awful, they make me feel the opposite of well & I hope I shall never have to take them again. Perhaps that's what the original poster is suffering from

I don't sleep during the day and go to bed between 9 and 10pm. Have no trouble getting to sleep but wake at about 2 and then 4 and that's my sleep for the night.
