Oxygen. Re infection.

Hi all. We went to see the Respiratory nurse today for a re- assessment for my Husbands oxygen. We have been told he has to use his oxygen in the car and whenever he feels is necessary. His oxygen dropped to 69 tonight without him knowing it and he had a funny turn. It maybe will improve when he gets completely over the chest infection he has had. I am keeping my fingers crossed.

Oh goodness Mavary,maybe he needs checking out again,those stats,& having a funny turn doesn't sound good,I wonder if he loses 02 at night?Maybe it's to do with the lung infection,but maybe not!

Hi Wendells. It was a bit worrying. He is going to have to recognise when his oxygen is dropping. IPF is a terrible disease which I wish would go away. This happened while he was watching TV in the evening. It hasn't happened before but I am going to have to keep my eye on it. When he saw the Respiratory nurse yesterday it wasn't as bad as when he has been resting at home. She has increased his oxygen though. How are you now. X

Hi Mavary,I didn't realise he had IPF,thought it was Copd,don't know why!!

Yes,it sounds a horrible illness,it must be hard for you both.I am feeling a lot better now txs,Harry not so good.I seem to be feeling the really hot weather here,more this year,not good with the breathing,but can't order the weather,I'm afraid,lol!

Hi Wendells. IPF is a killer. The average is about four and a half years. Some live longer and some shorter. Mike has had his for at least four years now. Maybe more. They told him he has about a year it must be two two and a half months ago. When he went into hospital a couple of weeks ago I didn't know then if he would come out. I wish we were down in the warmer weather as he is so much better in the sun. There are so many bugs in England at the moment. It's only a matter of time before he gets another one. He is so susceptible to them now. I'm sorry to hear Harry's not too good. Hope he soon improves. Think of us back here freezing. You have a lovely time and thanks for posting. Mavis. X

Oh Wendells I didn't mean to upset you. We are making the most of what we have and are going to enjoy ourselves when he is well. It's not all bad. I don't really want to think of the future only today. You have a lovely Christmas as well and stay healthy. Mavis. X

Hi Mavary

If the night time episodes don't improve once the chest infection has gone then my suggestion would be for you to ask the GP to refer your husband to a specialist for Sleep Apnea. The hospital will then give him a sleep test to see if he stops breathing for very short periods in the night. I had this done (as I was a night time screamer) and I am now awaiting a CPAP machine (for use at night) from my local hospital. I use oxygen 24 hours a day so I sleep with it on. I also drive whilst wearing my oxygen. I often wonder what the other drivers think when they me at traffic lights with my cannular sticking out of my nose. Please try not to worry.

Hi Bugsbunny. He has been on a C Pap machine for years now. His snoring was really bad and he would stop breathing for the count of thirty. He had it very badly. The difference with the machine is amazing. He is getting better wearing the oxygen in public. I think he was a bit self conscious at first but he now knows he has to wear it. Thanks for your post. Hi Dozydoormouse. I must say that until Mike had his oxygen I never noticed anyone with it before. Since he has had it I see people nearly every time I go out. I went to a Christmas party today at our local school and there was even someone there other than Mike. So what I am trying to say is people just don't see it. It's like wearing a pair of glasses. Do you really notice them on people? I don't. Mavis. X

I had breathing problems 15 years ago first I was told it was panic attracts, then asthma. then copd . in the end I was finally diagnosed as having IPF! I have been on oxygen for about 10 years . when I need it . I try hard not to use oxygen regularly. But when I am so bad and desperate my o2 level drops to 71 and that for me is agony, That's when I use oxygen. and of cause when I need it and that would be when oxygen falls to the 80s Its a wicked disease with great suffering while active. I don't have the funny turn you describe your husband had. But not nice if he were driving!. all in all, please don't worry as oxygen kills bacteria so that's a bit of help. And the rest no one can do any thing about .just look out for him love him and God bless you both xx

Thanks Oxytic. I just think 69 was a bit too low and this is why the Respiratory nurse told him he must use the oxygen to drive. How long have you been diagnosed with IPF? Mike had what they thought was bronchitis then Bronchiectasis. It could have been IPF all that time. The media bang on about cancer all the time which is still a terrible thing but you never hear about help for IPF sufferers. It's only recently that they are really trying to find a cure.
