Morning, I find this too so I'm trying to chew my dry oatcakes & nuts (of the almond & Brazil variety) really well to properly moisten before swallowing. As for the biscuits and mince pies? Banned from my home!

It's so important to keep food particles out of your airways Mustcarryon. If you're a skinny Minnie you could eat your mincepies with custard, cream or icecream? I'd like to but I'd become the size of a mini bus if I did :(

Thanks for that peeg. No, sadly i'm not a skinny Minnie (I wish) however, i'm not overweight. It's just that i'm not a big biscuit eater, I may have one or two now and again, the same with nuts, as far as mince pies I only ever eat them at this time of year. So when this started to happen I thought is it to do with the dryness of these foods that may aggravate my condition. Of course you are right we must keep our airways clear. I've had three c/I in the last 6 months, I certainly don't want another especially now. I think this calls for a review of my eating habits. xxx

You may have larengal sensory nauropathy (aka) the mystery chronic cough you can google this I could choke on air moist ,cold, 1 crumb ,smoke ,cleaner smells just about anything I never made it through a meal with a choking coughing session. Apparently after a bad sinus and throat infection it damaged the nerve in my larynx which left the nerve on high alert so my whole throat became sensitive .

Finding a doctor who would listen to me was another story finally I went to a ENT specialist in Canada and he knew exactly what I was trying to tell him he put me on(Gabapentin)which they have found works well for this It has made the world of difference I finally have my life back ..do not give up this will not go away

Hi Mustcarryon

I also find that some foods make me cough. I have stopped eating toast and dry crackers. Mind you my mouth is always dry and I am forever drinking water. I think it is the medication that makes our mouths dry and that in turn makes us cough with dry foods. I agree with Peeg that the way forward is to moisten our foods. Have a good day.

Regards

Mandy

Thanks for that. Yes I also have a dry mouth, it probably is the meds we take.

It's that it seems so often we have obstacles to challenge us, and they are often just ordinary everyday things that we automatically do without thinking. Who would think that something as simple as a biscuit or mince pie could at the end of the day cause a c/I. Oh well never mind, another day another lesson learned. Take care xxx

Hi

I can choke on anything even a sip of water!! I've also noticed certain foods seem to promote mucus in my chest building up alarmingly quickly. like chips or fatty foods (which I mainly steer clear of but.....

Theres definitely a link and when I spoke to consultant he shrugged his shoulders. Maybe they need to investigate this??

Take care

Sue

Hi suspan

If the consultant doesn't think of it then he will shrug it off, they can't think outside the box unfortunately. Sometimes it just needs a bit of common sense, something they often lack.

this post is making my craving for CAKE CAKE CAKE (a mince pie would do) almost unbearable :(

every day starting about 4pm I get this craving and this evening I just cant shake it. Tried eating a fruit yog, I'll now have a cup of Options to see if that shifts it.

I must not go down to the Shell garage. I must not go ............

Oh this has made me laugh. I do feel a bit guilty though, it was me that started it by talking about cake. I do hope your willpower lasts. xx

Very strange how this happens. My family think I am crackers, and yes you are right I can't eat them either. I don't take medication, so it isn't that. Chocolate makes me cough a lot, but I have found a strategy to overcome the problem, eat more, enjoy it and regret it later. Nuts are a definite no no, strangely some dairy products, cheese and yogurt, and I changed to soya milk as cow's milk affected me. I thought it was just me, as I am ever so slightly bonkers.

Hello mustcarryon I think it goes with the territory by the sounds of your replies of which im drawing some comfort as I was thinking 'oh no i cant have cream anymore, sherbert lemons, tomato soup, nuts, hot spicey food,so many really that can start that dreadful tickle, wondered if i was becoming to fussy!! My resp nurse said that dairy is common with us dodgy lung peeps to be a problem and can be an added weight issue for those who struggle to keep their weight up!I dont have that added issue,I could probably do with loosing a little from my waistline as it happens. One good thing it stops me from drinking to many baileys hic ooopsy :) 'Janexx

Sling a Baileys over here Jane! I can't say I've noticed anything in particular causing my tickling and coughing problem, I think with me it's perhaps mucus in my throat that stops stuff going down properly. Always make sure I have a bottle of water handy. It can be quite scary as the coughing makes you even more breathless. xx

haha most welcome would you like ice libby ? Im always prepared as I do persevere but have my own little rescue pack for my hairy tickley moments, water, soothers and covonia original.Plus i find that when these moments arrive air actually irritates it so practice pursed lip breathing or cup my hands in front of my mouth, arnt we funny with our little habits and routines. :) Janexx

Yes, you're right about the air irritating it, I find that too! I have my little bag beside me at all times with anything I may need, it comes to bed with me at night. Actually, I won't pinch your baileys, I have some strawberry and cream schnapps and it's divine dahling. Good job I get tiddly at the drop of a hat these days so can only manage one, otherwise the bottle would be gone in an evening! ;-) Libby xx

I thought it was just me - bread, biscuits, plain cakes (really fruity ones OK!), tuna and other flaky fish, some chicken breasts (all dry/flaky foods) and milk chocolate all set me off. Luckily plain chocolate not a problem. I gave up all the cake and biscuits for a while, and lost some weight- but discovered that the gluten free type don't seem to cause the same problem, so weight back on..... Some research needed I think. But not so likely to happen if it is the bronchiectasis folk and the doctors just shrug if we mention it.

I am told it is a vicious circle, if you cough (and don't we all) then you can strain the area around your throat, which makes it sensitive, then the food only needs to touch it to start a new cough, and so on and so on. Mine now feels like there is a lump to the right hand side and every thing just sits on it. It has been checked when I was last admitted, just strained was the answer. Cadbury's is awful, a guaranteed cough each time, perhaps we could get it on prescription to free up the mucus.

I throat cough a lot when I eat muesli, no idea why, just do. I eat the value stuff and bulk it out with sultanas. I was really worried about the coughing. Having read this thread I think I ought to stop worrying now :)
