Ideas to calm myself down please.

I know that my emotional responses to situations can effect my breathing, and make my asthma worse....anger seems to be the worst!

I used to be able to go for a walk to calm myself, but can't do that anymore

Anybody any ideas....apart from shouting and screaming and saying something I would later regret!

Totally agree with you knitter that anger is a no, no for my lungs too. The only thing I find that helps is to immerse myself in online games strangely enough; it distracts and calms me down - the thinking, strategy games are the best for me :)

Hi please read my reply to knitter i am sure it would help you to. People who go there are on oxygen and have come out different people. It has completely transformed my life and I am sure it would help you to. good luck

That was thoughtful of you care-full. I do however co-run a lung support group locally which runs on a very similar basis to Breathe Easy Groups and we meet not only on a group basis monthly but individually once a week and yes, the laughter and support is wonderful. :)

Oh where is your local group scrobbity I would like to come along I don't think you live far from me. :)

If you go to the main NHS page scroll down to the bottom, on the right you will see view services A to Z cick on it and then click b over on the right again you will see breath easy support services that should tell you where you local group is. hope this helps.

It's near Bournemouth. BC and if you are making a serious enquiry you are welcome to send me a message. I'm not sure on the BLF rules for self promoting support groups that aren't Breathe Easy ones on the open forum.

Is that why you're so reticent at any mention of Airhuggers? You're not sure of BLF rules?

Hi knitter I no that feeling I used to be able to go for walls and do different things in the house but Ian very limited on what I can do and that on it's own gets me angry frustrated you name it :( have you tried rescue remdie it's very good it's only herbal but check with you doctor if you can have it if your on other medication I also chew alot of sugar free chewing gum I've even got a colouring book and which I use when Ian feeling wound up.org doesn't work all the time but it's worth ago hope this helps xxx

My husband uses the rescue remedy spray - he finds it very useful (so did I many years ago when we took his mother on holiday with us!!!) Good Luck TAD xx

I could have used that when we took my dad on holiday with us. I didn't realize he could be so ackward and stroppy.

Hi Knitter my advice to you would be to get your Doctor to refer you to your local medical centre and join a club called breathe easy ,this is not widely known to sufferers of amstha And COPD. It Is a 6week course 2 days a week and each session last 2 hours .It consists of exercing and breathing , believe me I have not known anyone who has been and I know of at least 60 people who does not reccomend it, before I went I could not walk 50 paces without stopping now I can walk over a mile with no problem. if anything I am annoyed at

the consultants at the hostpital who could have reccomended this 10 years ago, also it is like a club,I never laughed so much in my life, I hope this will help good luck.

Thanks for all your answers, I get annoyed with myself because I am so easily wound up (blame the steroids!) and end up going around in circles.

I managed to go to my yoga class today as my cough is better, so a bit more de stressed.

I will find out about rehab classes...my Breathe Easy group used to run an exercise class, but that has finished now.

I will try some on line games too....my old laptop seems to have had a new lease of life after I thought of buying a new one.

That is the trouble,you do get wound up because you cant do the things you used to, but if there is one thing I learnt at the club is to allow more time to do do things[easier said than done I know] try the exercise I was taught to calm down and breathe easier, clasp your hands just under your ribs and take deap breathes through your nose and breath out slowly from your mouth. I find this helps me to calm down and take control of my breathing again , hope this helps good luck.

I breath in through my nose for count of two out through my mouth with pursed lips as if whistling for count of four. Helps greatly but annoys my son as sometimes I actually whistle.

I usually just sit quietly, with my eyes closed, and concentrate on breathing slowly.

Hi, if you have a local meditation group then do try that. At home, sit and breathe, and sit and breathe into the abdomen ( the area between the bottom of the breast bone and the navel) I suggest you do this when you are jot angry and breathless, try to build a healthy habit, 5 mins a day to begin with and then build to 10 mins, the later to 15-20 mins. Anger only burns the person who carries the anger. Good Luck :-)

Thanks PollyP , I have been to meditation classes and found them very helpful. I will try your breathing idea as well and practice every day.

I looked at the Amazon book list and saw a book on meditation and anger management, so I might invest in that.

Hi Knitter, I do deep, controlled breathing to relieve any kind of stress. I used to teach it to stressed out business people and they found it very beneficial. (Thought it was about time I practise what I preach & it works)!

smile - even if you don't feel like it ... anger goes and it's easier to breathe.

Get yourself a dog if you can walk slowly,,,best thing i ever did,,yes i can puff and pant, but the further i go the better my lungs are,,and since getting her i have not had 1 lung infection,,even the consultant said it was good,,,maybe something to think about,,i,m out in all weathers, and i know i,m not the only on here who walks there dog,,and is better for it

Please try an App called CALM or Headspace these are both Mindfulness a sort of meditation. You could also learn some Chi Gong which would help.
