Is It Safe For Me To Go Swimming,Sauna,Steam Room some say it's OK some say the steam room could cause me problems(fumes ect) Matt

Hi Matt,

Chlorine would def be a problem for me, and steam would get into my lungs. Sadly swimming is no longer an option with me.

Your GP would be the contact for you perhaps?

Hi Matt

I go swimming around 3 times a week and have up to now had no bother whatsoever. The warm atmosphere is actually quite nice. I too was worried abotu the chlorine but you can hardly smell it these days, I think they use much less than they used to. its fantastic gentel exercise and its made a huge difference to me (although I appreciate others struggle). If I were you I would pop to your local pool and gauge how warm it is, how much it smells of chlorine etc so you can make up your own mind. You can also ask when the quiet times are - I find swimming peaceful and mentally very restorative.

I have trouble with the steam, Jacuzzi, hydro pool and enclosed indoor swimming pools.

But it can vary, for instance at the hospital the indoor enclosed pool is a very warm and steamy room and has a low ceiling, when someone opens the pool door to the foyer my breathing is affected. On the other hand I have been swimming during the summer at the local community pool that has a high ceiling with doors and windows open to the outside air, I am ok with that.

I think some are not affected, so I would just say go and test the space first see how you find it.

Its great to feel the warm water on the skin and to float in complete relaxation, this highly recommended :)

I go swimming at local dw gym pool and use sauna and jaccuzi 3 times week , take my time swimming but I beleive it's gentle and therapeutical for us lung sufferers.keeps me sane ?! I think :)) persevere and see what works for you

Hi Matt, I recall the respiratory expert at PR saying saunas are a no no. She said to try steam, for some it's really beneficial but for others they can't tolerate them.

I would deffo call an expert if I were Mattcass , other than that, there's only one way to find out.

Hi Matt I try to go swimming every week but I am not always well enough or have enough energy. I do find it very relaxing if it is not too cold. Give it a go !!

I have a paralysed diaphragm and swimming is a big no no. Because I cannot breath as the action interferes with my ability to breath for some strange reason. One thing I have learnt myself is my lungs do not like sudden change hot or cold. As you are aware we are all so different in our triggers. Try it but leave as soon as it does not feel right.

Try putting your head over a steaming bowl at home and see if that affects you? Be careful.

Swimming is great exercise if you can manage it. I would say give it a go and see for yourself as we are all so different. x

Hi. I have asthma bronchiectasis and scarred lung.

My specialist has told me steam is good to loosen phlegm, and gentle swimming is a great way for exercise, so I reckon he knows what he`s talking about and that it would be ok.

I go swimming 3 times a week the smell is not as bad I'm sure they used neat bleach a few years ago

I always pick up an ear infection in pools and hate the chlorine which i don't think is much cop for the lungs. Though i live right by the sea, i hadn't swum in it for about 4 years and thought that must be a thing of the past too. But this summer with two friends in attendance - it was beach birthday party on a hot day - i thought i would try, and blow me i managed to swim, slowly and creakily with my escorts nearby, for about 10 minutes with a minute's rest clinging to a breakwater post in the middle - i was well pleased.

Check with your GP, mattcass, but you can only experiment and see what works for you.
