My husband struggles sometimes - he was given a drug called mucodyne which is used to thin the mucous down and help him to clear it. He also uses a flutter pipe which can help. The morning is worse I think because he has been laid down all night. It can take him quite some time to clear his chest. Some people use steam but my husband can't cope with that.

The doctor also gave him saline solution for his nebuliser and this can also help but he tends to only use this when he has an infection. I would have a word with the doctors and see if they have anything to help. And it might be an idea to call the BLF helpline (click on the red balloon) - they may have some good advise.

Good luck, with love TAD xx

Mucodyne (or Carbocisteine is the other name for it) helps, but if you see your respiratory nurse ask them to explain how to do the huffing cough. We really doubted this would work but it does, not immediately it can take up to 20 minutes. Basically if you sit upright and give a really deep huff it helps bring the mucky stuff up. Good luck

I have bronchiectasis thus excess mucus too , I use mucodene ,arthmoiacin , and swear by regular daily salt nebulising as i beleive it is a natural cleanser ,also I use the flutter device .certain times I extract more mucous than other times ,but seems to be more in the morning. It's uncomfortable to do and draining bug better than infection .

I have a similar problem. In my case it is mucus from my sinus running down the back of my throat - called Post Nasal Drip. I use a saline douche before going to bed and this reduces the "first thing in the morning" problem quite a bit. I have a bowl in the bathroom into which I put half a teaspoon of salt, a quarter of a teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda and make up with half a pint of lukewarm water. The idea is to snort the saline water up the nose and then out of the mouth. Sounds pretty disgusting and it takes a while to get used to it but it is well worth the effort. Any way it works for me. Give it a try! It eventually becomes almost second nature at bedtime.

Thanks for posting this - it reminded me I used to do it but haven't for a while. Will start again as the PND is atrocious :)
