Went shopping last night with wife and my son half way round i had an attack only what i call a small one but you should have seen the look i had like if i had some sort plague .lucky for me i had use a wheelchair as any one uhad the same thing happen to them

I have a similar story...half way around a big supermarket I started to get breathless so I made my way to the checkout...took my inhaler but felt worse. The checkout girl carried on talking to her friend and I had to abandon the trolley take more Ventolin and sat on a chair.
No-one said a word or did anything, but after a rest I managed to unload the shopping and leave, but I have never dared go to a large shop again alone...only small local ones and use the internet for heavy goods.
My asthmatic friend has a very wheezy cough and gets lots of dirty looks and has to say that its not catching....likewise my friend with IPF has to put up with comments..
Thats the joy of a Breathe Easy club ...all in the same boat
I was in the middle of the shop if it was not for my wife son i think the shop would have called for the ambulance as it would have gone in to a full attack .
I was once putting fuel in the car at Tesco, felt I was getting very breathless, made it to the shop and just dropped to my knees. They got me a chair and asked if I wanted an ambulance and brought a drink of water. They had to "cordon" my car off at the pump so queues were building and a large queue was also forming in the shop, and it seemed everyone was looking at me, a smile wouldn't have gone amiss! Anyway, I recovered and managed to drive away. I realised a long time later that it could have been the fumes that made me so breathless? Sadie xxx
Hi Sadie, husband has to fill up with diesel as i once collapsed in London in taxi queue. That was before any diagnosis started. People around were lovely, offering inhalers etc. I was talking to my son when mid sentence - down I went like a sack of spuds. Breathing was very laboured. Very careful around cars now. Alison
When the swine flu panic was in full swing, I went to GP for check up. I had a coughing attack. A couple across the aisle from me got up, looked at me in disgust and said "they tell people not to come to the doctor if they have flu". Well, I had recovered from coughing fit and said "I haven't got flu" to which the man replied "I don't care what you've got, we don't want it". I then said very loudly "You can't catch what I have, it's a lung disease". Don't know what everyone else in the waiting room thought, but I was furious and quite out of sorts about it. PEOPLE Bah!!!
Thinking of having a tattoo done saying "DON'T WORRY YOU CAN'T CATCH LUNG DISORDERS" it's very annoying when we get judged, I have COPD, Asthma and Bronchiectasis, though it's the latter that;scauses me most griefas I'm a VERY productive Bronchiectite, complete with crackles, rattles and projectile sputum (sorry for the explanation!) sometimes it's not easy going out when it's at it's worst, maybe I'll start wearing a mask but I'd more than likely be judged as having a highly contagious disease!!! Gee we can't win.

I am asthmatic too and have a bad cough. I always sit right at the front of the bus now as I got so fed up with people (usually little old ladies) giving me terrified looks and scurrying away as fast as they can! The last one that did that I did say it's nothing contagious dearie you are not going to catch anything. I felt like I had the plague or something.

I sometimes think I should walk around with a large bell crying 'unclean, unclean'!
maybe a badge that says something like " your colds and coughs can put me in hospital but my lung disease won't do the same to you"

Well I cringe and walk away whenever any one coughs or sneezes near me and I would just think anyone doing that should I cough or sneeze may be protecting their lungs too. It works both ways, the world doesn't revolve around lung patients.
One good thing about meeting with other lung patients is generally they will not bring an infection into the group.

I had to visit the 'Lung Function Clinic' using hospital transport, they duly checked me out, found to be stable and discharged me to the care of my GP. On the way home I had an elderly gentleman in a wheelchair behind me coughing all over me for 20 mins.
Two weeks later I was in a 'Blue-Lamp' ambulance with pneumonia!

Hi blakelyC, you got me thinking, even when peoples reaction to my lung condition can upset me at times ,I also get annoyed when people cough and sneeze near me...feel like offering them a tissue. Thanks!
Next time I go the Tube I think I might start coughing over everyone else, they might clear off and give me a seat
Another thing I hate is when standing at a bus stop, someone comes and stands next to me blowing smoke all over me. I just cough a lot and keep giving them black looks. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.
