hello all. newly diagnosed with copd a couple of days ago. obviously I need to kick the ciggies into touch, but I've been a heavy smoker for best part of 40 years. . have tried to stop in the past with patches / gum, but always failed miserably. has anyone tried those e-cigs ? and if so are they effective ?

I gave up smoking 8 months ago, using ecigs, they are brilliant. In the early days I still craved a real ciggy, but that soon wears off and I now find the smell of people smoking really disgusting. Even under stressful situations which was my brother dying suddenly in August I have not gone back to smoking. Do give a try and I wish you every success.

If you have any more questions, do please ask.

I managed to stop several years ago with patches on the 4th attempt, never stop giving up you will stop permanently, no haven't tried e-cigs but it would be the best thing you could do stopping smoking good luck.

I forgot to say welcome to this site. I also have copd diagnosed in March 2013 as severe. I was a heavy smoker for about 40 years plus and had tried everything else including hypnosis, Champix, gum ,patches etc. with no success. Good luck, you will feel so much better when you succeed.

Welcome, Postie. You have some good advice to choose. I chose the one day at a time method in 1997 and it worked for me. Hate the things now and feel sorry that people cant get round to giving up which isn't easy but so worth it.

feel a bit stupid now for ever starting smoking in the first place. I know it's a very old cliché but if I only knew then what I know now. thing is there wasn't any real warnings about the dangers of smoking 40 years ago...and quintus, yes i'm sure i'm going to have a million and one questions to ask down the line, really glad I came across this site. looked on loads of different websites and am now more confused than ever. some sites seem to condradict each other. at least on here I can chat with people who actually have the condition and are much more likely to know what they're talking about.

Hello Postie, all the very best, can't advise on e cigs but I wish they'd had them back when I gave up (times too numerous to mention!), Eventually made it though and now I can't understand why it was so difficult. Use any method possible, even gp's let you use two items of nicotine replacement at once (you'll have to check which ones tho). Good luck! AMB

Hello Postie and welcome. I used just about everything in turn (patches (4 times), mouth-spray, Champix (twice), hypnotherapy) but eventually managed on patches. Why did they work that time? I think because it was my time to give up. I had made my mind up this time was it and I would succeed. Another member recently gave up and I knew from her post that she would succeed because she was committed to doing so. So, make up your mind, then go for it. Good luck. :)

Welcome Postie, you are doing the very best thing for yourself in stopping smoking, I am wishing you every success in all your efforts.

I can't advise on the ecigs at all sorry.

Best wishes BC

Hello Postie, I used ecigs this time and did it. I can't advise on how safe they are. To show how addicted I had become. even after having given it up once for 5 or 7 years, I had two e cigs so when one needed charging I had the other. Didn't take too long. Made it through to just puffing on an empty one. Sounds stupid but now I use nothing, but still get cravings.

Hi Postie - don't feel stupid about smoking we didn't know! And to be honest I think there should be even more about it now! Good luck I am sure you will be able to stop. Don't be too hard on yourself - it is an addictive drug but I am sure you can do it! TAD xx

Hi postie. As the others have said giving up is the best thing you can do. I did it the long way round. I had one here and one there. I one day said this is stupid and that was that I never had another one. I've said it to others if you can give up for three weeks you are nearly home and dry. The thing is never have another one or you will be back in the trap.

My hubby smokes like a steam train he ordered one of them e-cigs it came last week you get a case the size of a mobile phone which contains a battery 3 bottles of liquid and the e-cig he is smoking the e-cig and his cigarettes and since Wednesday he has smoked about 40 cigarettes he normally smokes that a day. He says he feels much better and as a friend told him he would after a while prefer the e-cig to the real one he paid £40.00

well I bought an e-cig on Saturday, took one drag of it and seriously thought I was going to choke to death. thing is , I got the 18mg mint flavour so I'm guessing it's just too strong. so I'm going to try a different flavour at maybe 6mg and see how that goes.... thanks for all the replies people.. much appreciated.
