Welcome, babycat, I think there is a UK website dealing with drugs. They will give you all the information, you want. + there should have been info. sheet with the meds. But anytime feel free to ask questions of us.

The active ingredient in phyllocontin tablets is theophylline, which is mixed with something to make it soluble (the mixture is called aminophylline).

Bear in mind that theophylline has a narrow margin between the blood level needed for it to be effective and the level that is high enough to cause side effects. The tablets are almost certainly of the prolonged release kind designed to maintain a constant blood level, and shouldn't be crushed or chewed.

I have a real problem taking pills - I usually find I can get them down with a mouthful of soft food - but no doubt you've tried that...... Gill

The bigger ones can get stuck - a gulp and a mouthful of water. I dont believe in crushing them if they are meant to break down in the stomach.

Hi babycat welcome to this very friendly helpful forum.I take these have done for the past 15 years, itake 2x225mg at night and 1x 225mg in the morning. I was given them for bronchospasm and they have definitely helped me,they are also given as a single dose at night to prevent night-time asthma and early morning wheezing.Your hubands blood level will be checked this is because the effective dose is close to the toxic dose, dont be scared by that ihave never had a problem in all this time.,I do believe that there is a liquid you will need to check this perhaps if you click on the red balloon top right corner of this page they will be able to help you further.Hope this was of some help to you.takecare and let us know how you get on.:) Janexx

When swallowing large pills, tilt your chin down instead of up.

Although tilting up seems to come naturally when swallowing, it will actually open up the trachea (>> lungs) and constrict the esophagus (>> stomach).

When you tilt your chin down it opens up the esophagus and closes the trachea, so the pill can slide down more easily (and is less likely to down the wrong tube).

That's what works for me, anyway.

Yes ,I too take phylocontin ,When I first started on them they really upset my stomach, but after a while now ok, although I am not sure that they have helped my breathing, but I will try anything that may help, As I hate not being able to live my life to the full, So negative, even though I have the most wonderful partner, Cannot stand all the jobs which he does for me that I used to enjoy doing, Please excuse the woe is me,bad day puffing!!

Thank you all for your insight. Doctor gave him some capsules which can be opened and are really easy to swallow. Once again thank you all for your foresight.xxx
