I talked to my pulmonary nurse who referred me to a dietician. Maybe you can ask too?

Try the BLF nurses. They are great and will probably either be able to help or point you in the right direction. x

You sound as if you need more support than you have now. Perhaps you could talk to your doctor and ask for a referral. My friends daughter has been ill with an rating disorder (we live in Yorkshire) and was able to be referred to a specialist team who dealt with eating. She has been helped with therapy and dieticians etc. I wonder if there is something similar in your area? Perhaps the blf helpline may have some contacts. It is dreadful when food becomes such a problem. Please try to ask your doctor or respiratory team for help and just keep asking. With love and kind wishes TAD x x

Hi Pamela

Hope Im right ... you have recently stopped smoking?

This can make the need to eat, especially sweet things very hard to resit

Apparently, so I have read, one of the effects of nicotine is to cause a small but significant 'sugar rush' as it causes sugar to be released into the blood from our 'natural reserves', this is why quitting makes us want to eat more, we have been hooked into regular sugar 'hits' during the day.

This is why people, including me, gain weight when we quit, we are replacing the sugar hit with biccys and choc etc.

I gained 2+ stone in 18 months, and have now taken about 18 months to lose 1 and half stone. I no longer feel the need for sugar.... and just half a stone to go .... very slow dieter me, 3lbs lost over two months and usually one or two gained, but overall pattern is very slowly downwards.

If this is the reason you feel food is becoming an issue ... stick with it, the benefits of giving up smoking are greater than anything, you can loose the weight later.

(btw if the issue is being underweight then I have no experience, tho I am sure there are those here who have)

All the best Pam

Keep strong, think positive

Just lost my blooming reply - gone up in smoke (pardon the pun)

Giving up smoking comes with problems such as weight. If you need to lose weight, try weight loss resources. Google it and study it. I think also your activity helps to lose weight, too. Being somewhat sedentary has made me put on weight. Curses +++

You may like me have been smoking for comfort...so now eating for comfort. Maybe try some talking therapy? Any addiction is avoidance of dealing with something else...hence tis easier to give up at great moments in life like getting married or promotion etc....when we feel on top of the world. X

Hi Pamela, I suffered with an eating disorder for many years and found that I started eating when I felt 'happier'...so I think the two things are connected in some way.

It's hard to motivate yourself if you're tired from lack of food because you can not eat, also then, because there's no 'fuel' in you, you are just running on 'nervous' energy , burning more calories, and then the fight with food and low weight continues....you find yourself in a place that is 'familiar' and feels 'safe' because you 'know it' so it gets harder to break the cycle.....but you need nutrition in this fight with c.o.p.d. and you need to keep your body exercised and strong ... back to motivation......set yourself a GOAL or a few even......

when you get a disease that lands you on a site for sick lungs or something else that's no fun it's like a reminder of time being limited! so perhaps to get yourself eating and 'motivated to eat' a good idea would be to start taking the time to do those things that make YOU FEEL happy, GOALS you've yet to achieve.....things that get you feeling 'enthusiastic'...'excited' 'joyful' even ( I left many dreams and goals behind for a long time but now I'm trying every day and having fun )....and then maybe you will feel a little more hungry....food can be so good for you, you are SO worth it!!!! it works for me, ;) I have a LOVE LOVE relationship with food now that years ago I would never have thought possible!!! Please Pamela ask for some help, we all need help sometimes, you deserve the best , hufferpuffer x ( sorry for rambling on! )

Hi Pamela I have not answered you till now because I recall you posted about the anorexia before and my view remains the same, you need professional help first and foremost with the anorexia I feel, tea and sympathy is good but it will not give you the nutrition your body needs to stay alive and stay healthy, I am concerned if you do not seek professional help with this and seek out on going dedicated eating order support you will become even more ill.

With any illness there are choices a person can make, to decide which way they will travel, no matter how hard, no matter how joyful, no matter how life enhancing or destructive that journey may be. I so hope you will choose, the way that is good for you. In making the take care of Pamela choice you will seek out and be advised by those who are professionally trained to help you with this eating disorder to frequent place that are dedicated in supporting people with eating disorders on and off line. I am sure your doctor and counsellor can put you in touch with these.

I am wishing for you a wonderful tomorrow.

May you always be surrounded by those people that can help you the most.

All good wishes BC

Hi Pamela

I have been following your battle with stopping smoking and have really admired your strength to get this far with all the stress you have had to deal with. You have done absolutely fantastically.

All my life, I've always had problems with trying to eat. Any stress, and my appetite nosedived and weight dropped off me in no time. If I felt hungry, I had a cig instead. Since being diagnosed with COPD 18 months ago, my weight has dropped off again and I've been struggling to put it back on. Whenever I'm down, I can feel sick just smelling or looking at food. Yet I really want to eat. I just can't.

I actually stopped smoking 9 years ago, just to put weight on. I didn't gain an ounce for the first 4 months, I was gutted, even though I had started eating things I wouldn't have even tried before. My taste buds slowly came alive and soon everything was yummy. Still, I was puzzled why I wasn't getting any fatter. Then, all of a sudden, I just ballooned. Lol.

I think because I had smoked since 11 years old, my body went into shock when I stopped smoking, so it took a long time for it to adjust to being nicotine free. I'd stopped craving the cigs after only 9 days of patches. I saved the money and every few days I bought some paving stones to build a patio. That was my reward. I felt well pleased with myself as the flags piled up. Haha.

Pamela, you are still having a bit of a hard time over stopping smoking, the feel good factor hasn't hit you yet because you have stopped during an unhappy time. But, believe me, it will hit you soon. It is so much easier to stop smoking when things are going well in life. I know, because that was why I found it so easy 9 years ago. I was happy.

That's why you have done so brilliantly, because you've done it at the worst possible time but, Pamela, you've done it. Nothing will ever be so hard for you again. You are a very strong person Pamela. You should be feeling so proud of yourself. So, relax for a while now. Give yourself time to enjoy winning such a massive battle. Buy yourself some little treats to eat and put them away for yourself, Think of them as wages, they're your reward - you've earned them.

I don't know about you, but I tend to always want to eat more at night. ( 1, 2 and 3 in the morning.) So, I always make sure there are buns, chocolate ect... in the fridge for my nightly raids. I also always eat better if it is cooked for me.

Little and often is better than a plate full, so you don't feel overfaced. (I can feel full just looking at a plate of food.)

All I'm saying really Pamela is, one hurdle at a time. Give yourself credit where it is due. and celebrate that your biggest hurdle is beaten. And don't worry, you will soon be getting an appetite, without you even trying.

Well done you !!!

Casper xxx

PS, I hope you'll be there with coping tips for me when I finally manage to kick the weed.xx

Hi casper thankyou so much for taking the time to write to me regarding my strength giving up smoking that's really the only positive thing I've done in my life and Iam trying to keep hold of that strength it's Bern one long hard road regarding the ciggys and I don't think iam in the clear yet but I will keep battling with the nicotine it's had enough of my time :) regarding my eating I used to be a size 18 to 20 so I went on a diet and got down to a size 12 which I was happy with then my health started to deteriate my disabilities got worse and I became a recluse in my own home some days scare bd to open my curtains that's when things started to take a nosedive for me because I loved life was very house proud and most of that had Been taken away from me because of my disabilities that's when the aneroxia came into I Hayes myself for all that was happening I wanted some control back and that we're my eating disorder came into my own control where nobody could take it away from me how wrong was I :( I feel so selfish because all this is happening infringe of my wonderful family who mean the world to me and I haven't got no control any more and that scares me and makes me sad because there alot of people on this site and outside this site that, are fighting for there life and Ian just giving up on mine and for that I apologise to the people on here on a brighter more I seen my care coordinator yesterday and now I have agrees to see a eating specialists in the next week or so:) I thank you all and my family for not giving up on me :) if you need any advice regarding the ciggys feel free to ask it's so worth giving up again thankyou taking the time to write to me kind regards xxx

Hi Pamela, I hope your feeling a bit brighter today. Ah, the guilt, I have finally come through that one, I hope. My heart felt broken for my lads. But, at the end of the day, I didn't deliberately get poorly. Loads of people smoke and nothing happens to them.

Guilt is such a negative emotion. It holds us back from trying to get back on our feet. The good people on here are right, a positive attitude is a must, although I struggle each day to have one.

One day at a time is the way to do it Pamela. Trying to look into the future causes over-thinking and getting worked up.

I'm sending you good (((((Vibes.))))) Lol. Be good to yourself.
