Hi there, not being a medic of any kind, I was suffering from this and not actually getting any sleep. Finally went for sleep study which indicated that my oxygen levels were dropping so low during sleep that my natural defences were waking me up. Now use a CPap machine to control breathing at night.

I put up the same thing not not long ago. Waking up choking was very scary. Told my doctor that I could not even use my inhaler as it just hit the back of my throat and choked it out. He gave me an inhaling tube and it lessened. But in my opinion it was during the time when I had a lung infection. Finally my infection cleared up and I have not had problems since. But I do dread getting more troubles during the wet winter months. Oxygen had never been mentioned to me for night times. I still dont sleep and spend my time playing Scrabble in the early hours to keep my mind occupied and also that I do not toss and turn and get depressed with it. It was 0400 this morning before I attempted to sleep.

The good think about Scrabble is that the Americans/Canadians etc are awake when we should be sleeping.

You could ask to be tested for sleep apnoea. This can cause someone to awaken feeling they are choking due to something in the throat closing down and stopping normal breathing.

l know the feeling of been awake early hours but when you say he gave you a tube for your inhalers well my inhalers were changed from salbutamol and the brown one to a one called brycnal and another one and l have to turn the bottom of them and its like a powder but its a better one cos these don't make me cough any more when taking them like the others did but its the nasty cough and the choking that bothers me now l can cope with my other illnesses but l think it will be nice if we could find a cure for this c.o.p.d but l suppose its chances of that are the same as winning the lottery lol

Hi Minkymo

I think you could be describing one of the effects of sleep apnoea, where the back of the throat/top of mouth presses down to block your airway, it causes a pause in breathing and this wakes you up with a choking feeling ... I dont have it but the husband of a friend of mine does,

He has been seen recently by GP about this, apparently something can be done

this is the NHS site, you could check it out and see if it seems like you have this, and see GP when you can anyway

All the best

Hope it improves for you
