.......The Dalai Lama has interesting take on how we are doing in the West in terms of wellbeing..............

This is taken from his piece called ''The Paradox of Our Age.''

''We have,

more conveniences but less time.

more degrees but less sense.

more knowledge but less judgement.

more experts but more problems,

more medicines but less healthiness

been to the moon and back.

sadly yes

and probably a lot more in that line

more awareness of 'rights' ........... less of 'responsibilities'

increased freedom to be uniquely ourselves ....... less tolerance of those who are not like ourselves

and so on

very thought provoking post Richard

Thanks

Beth

It is the truth within the Dalai Lama's words that should make us all stop and think for once Beth

Yes very good Richard and postscript - certainly re uniqueness but less tolerant very true and very judgemental to which I place some blame on reality shows where the 'public' is asked to judge - very sad. My favourite along these lines is when Gandhi was asked what he thought of Western civilisation, he replied he 'thought it would be a good idea'.

not heard the Gandhi quote before

Excellent .... and so true

We can all be judgemental of others without stopping to think sometimes! undine

Rush, rush, rush but do folk ever stop to reflect on things. Just meditate. Having said this, what I was doing when I was younger - just rushing. Only now, can I reflect on the meaning of your post.

We never stopped to think in our youth annieseed, but with the passing of the years we now have that time to stop and think

"We could say that meditation doesn’t have a reason or doesn’t have a purpose. In this respect it’s unlike almost all other things we do except perhaps making music and dancing. When we make music we don’t do it in order to reach a certain point, such as the end of the composition. If that were the purpose of music then obviously the fastest players would be the best. Also, when we are dancing we are not aiming to arrive at a particular place on the floor as in a journey. When we dance, the journey itself is the point, as when we play music the playing itself is the point. And exactly the same thing is true in meditation. Meditation is the discovery that the point of life is always arrived at in the immediate moment. "

I found it very poignant Alison

Still truckin is so right. I am not a regular churchgoer but I love to sit in a church or a cathedral just to meditate on life. I can sit there for a long time.

In your case Mocarey 'Slow down you move to fast'

Really daft this, so please forgive. I go into the middle of a wood with tall trees, tilt my head back and watch the tops of the trees moving in the wind - hypnotical.

I used to love lying in my Grampies woods watching the sunlight twinkle through the trees

Not daft at all. Very normal round here!

Now I am ancient, I can take my time and reflect - the busy times have sadly disappeared but --- enjoy!!
