Eating later than normal.

I have a problem when I eat later than my normal which is about 6.00pm. I am on a diet so I don't eat a lot anyway. Last night family arrived which meant we ate about 7.30pm. Went to bed at 11.00pm and woke about 12.30 coughing. Coughing up the usual muck for about 40 mins. Finally settled down. Went to sleep propped up. .Awoke about 2.30 with more of the usual coughing. Crept downstairs and continued coughing. Finally finished coughing about 3.40am. Propped myself up on the setee and stayed there .This is not food choking but coughing to clear the lungs. Coughed so much made my lungs feel sore in my back. I don't think I have an infection as the mucus is clear. This happens frequently if my eating pattern is changed. My wife tries to explain to the family that we cannot go out for dinner at night because of this problem. They do not seem to understand. Does anyone else have these eating problems?

Larry.

Actually my husband has - he could always eat late at night even at midnight it didn't matter BUT it does matter now. He just can't eat later than 7pm and he seems to have the same sort of problems. Coughing and coughing, can't get comfortable, can't sleep. Not sure why. I hope you don't have an infection but keep an eye on it. Take care. TAD xx

Hi, I cant eat late any more either, I don't know whether it is acid reflux making me cough, but I think the digestive process uses a lot of oxygen too so I get more breathless if I eat and go to bed and lie down on a full stomach.

Hi knitter, I don't get the acid but you may be right about the oxygen usage. It is a good thought. Many thanks, Larry

I cant eat after a certain time. I have hiatus hernia and reflux. Consequently, the meal does a U turn! Not good

Hi Annie, I don't have that problem, but a relative of mine did have. I will keep my problems as I don't like being sick. Thanks for the reply. All the best, Larry.

Hi, I used to suffer terribly with coughing up mucus as soon as I went to sleep but with me it was severe post nasal drip. It was getting on my chest. I would cough and cough tons of clear stuff.

The Dr said acid reflux was causing my severe nasal drip and cough. I thought it was rubbish but he doubled my Lanzarapole to 60mg a day and I had to take Gaviscon 4 times a day, with the last dose right before I went to sleep. I think I was on this regime for about 4 weeks and it did the trick. I get the odd day of nasal drip but nothing on the scale of what It was.

My son has just gone through 18 months of hell with such an horrendous cough. He was coughing so hard, he was seeing stars. I was worried sick there was something really bad up with him. They were treating him for Asthma, but nothing they gave him worked, (In fact, the inhalers made him cough worse.) His peak flow reading was always around the same.

Eventually they found out it was severe acid reflux getting into his lungs. He could also possibly have very mild Asthma.

Hi, my acid reflux is under better control now so coughing and choking at night is much reduced. Being propped up has helped for years. Also I don't eat late as I know I'll be coughing for hours. Good luck. :-) Alison

I sleep propped up most nights now as well. I no longer eat after 6. Its a nuisance but we get by. Thanks Alison,

Larry.

Hi Larry, do you use pillows to prop yourself up? I tried all sorts of permutations using triangle pillws etc but I now have a wedge from the internet (memory foam). It s the best so far but I do need pillows as well. :-) :-) Alison

Hi Alison, I just use pillows and can usually manage with those. I don't sleep well anyway and am usually up between 3 and 5. Thanks Larry.

I had this problem for several years until I saw a new consultant who diagnosed gastric reflux , this is common with cough related asthma and happens because the diaphragmatic sphincter is weakened. He gave me Omniprisol 20mg to take at 6pm before I have my evening meal . The problem has gone away unless I eat too late. Olibas oil on a tissue under the pillow helps as does Original Benylin just before you try to go to sleep.

Hi GrannyS, I think I will see my GP about this as it has been going on for a few years now. Thanks, Larry
