Hi all, I was diagnosed five years ago with moderate Emphysema but I am now classed as severe and have been advised that I am unfit for work. I have managed to get DLA Mobility and ESA in the Support group but had to appeal their decisions in both cases. Just wanted to say hi and introduce myself to everyone!

Hello - I hope that you find this site very useful. There are lots of people with great advise and information who have been so kind. I care for my husband who has severe COPD - a bit like you spent 5 years not really noticing it and then it suddenly became severe. It is not the end of your world!

I could rattle on for ages about what we do and how we try to live as normally as possible! But the one thing that definitely changed his life for the better was the PULMONARY REHAB course he attended two years ago (actually just started his second course) - it is a run here by the specialist respiratory team and is run twice a week for about 8 weeks. Each session is split into two - one hour exercise which is strictly supervised and one hour information. Having said that the first time I asked the doctor for a referral we were told he was not bad enough!! I persevered and it was definitely a turning point. I could not recommend it more highly.

thanks Tadaw, I attended the assessment for the PULMONARY REHAB course yesterday and start on Sep 17th. It's good to know that your husband found it beneficial and I hope that I find the same too, will keep you all informed!

Oh great, I think you will find it very useful and really help with your fitness levels. Just remember to keep up the exercise when the course has finished!!! Good Luck and please let us know how you get on and what interesting information you learn. Thanks TAD xx

hi u mean in 5yrs u gone from moderate to severe,are u still smoking are have u never smoked,

Hi Carol, I was a smoker but gave up within six months of being diagnosed and haven't smoked since then.

Hi and welcome hertsguy.

I have very severe emphysema. I gave up smoking 2 years ago because I got diagnosed with angina and blamed the fags. A few weeks later I was diagnosed with COPD. There was no mild or moderate levels I went through. I could breathe normally when I smoked. I never got short of breath. This has happened to others on here. I find it odd.

Hello hertsguy, there are things you must not do i.e. smoke and many things you should do. The most important of these are to keep yourself fit and use all you learn at Pulmonary Rehabilitation and second is to work out with your specialist the best course of medication. And importantly avoid infection from others. That's enough for now. All the best. Adrian
