Hi Suki65, I get it quite often and I really shouldn't be recommending anything as I'm not medically qualified.

(I use to help run a holistic health centre though).

I used to see an osteopath when earning properly. Now I cant afford it so use the knowledge I've picked up over the years to help myself.

Mine comes in my hamsting & bum area. I use a wedge cushion to sit on to ensure my hips are higher than my knees to relieve stress/pressure in the sacroiliac area.

VERY genlte stretching helps mine. I use a tennis ball to massage the tight area of my glutes (by placing it between the wall & my sore bits & pressing into it).

Dont do any movements you know will exacerbate it.

There are probably some exercises on YouTube if you have a little search.

Best is to seek expert advice as you need to find out the cause & get the correct treatment. Good luck

I will be showing Pete your post as he is suffering badly at the moment. The tennis ball sounds like a good idea. Pete's pain is in the bum area (making him a pain in the bum literally!) so he could learn something here peeg as the physio cannot help him. xx

I think you need to see your doctor about managing this. My mother has suffered with it for years and she is on specifically prescribed medication to help her manage the pain and aid mobility.

Pete has sciatica and went to our GP who recommended the physio. She cannot really help so he has an appointment at the end of the month for a muscularskeletal person who may be able to do more. He has used a TENS machine which helped a little but not that much. I do think that certain exercises could be good but get an appointment for your doctor first. Good luck. xx

Hi my mother had severe sciatica years ago. She found what helped the most was a chiropractor. He managed to partially free the sciatic nerve and from then on she completely recovered.

My wife has it and she uses a TENS Machine. But when it starts she would stand by a table or chair for support and lift one leg so the knee is as high as it can be. (Pain permitting don't over do it) Now this seems to help loads and she does it as a maintenance exercise. This was explained by her physio that is a way of opening the spine and easing the pince on the nerve. It is a try and see which leg does the best.

Be Well

Hi if she has a prolapsed disc like I did the lifting the leg thing will help like it did me as it takes the weight of the back that is squashing the sciatic nerve when i stood up I only had a few minutes before the weight load got more and more then it would get to the disc that was prolapsed (squashed) then after the weight load got to that disc it squashed the prolapsed disc so it pushed out onto the nerve trapping it when I sat down or lifted the weight of onto one leg it helped because it wasn't squashing it as much making it easier to cope with its like a balloon squash a balloon and a bit will be pushed out onto the nerve hope this helps

Like Peeg, mine affected the hamstring/buttock area. I had no pain in my back. I found that a pillow to raise the area helped, plus a heat pad, but I was in severe pain for months. Coughing was so painful! An mri showed large cysts that were blamed but fortunately the pain faded as quickly as it had arrived. During those 6 months I was tried on many painkillers but many made me too sick and I relied on paracetamol and ibuprofen. Awful. Anyone suffering with this has my complete sympathy.
