All the medical people I have seen in this area say that if your sats are 88 or below at rest then you need oxygen. I know this figure varies and some say 92 or below.

Hiya Music.
My SATS are usually 93 at rest but dropping to 85/86 when exercising. To go to the PR classes they make me use oxygen. They have suggested that if I do anything a little bit strenuous at home I use it then too.

From literature and from memory:
"...............
I am of the understanding if blood oxygen saturation levels drop or are consistently low at 90% or below you should be assessed for oxygen therapy.
Normally when blood oxygen saturation levels are consistently at 98% oxygen therapy would not be required.
I believe when blood oxygen saturation levels are consistently below 88% for extended periods of time and dependant on the individual patient's circumstances, this is when organ damage or organ failure may occur (at these levels oxygen therapy would be required)
Arterial Blood gases are taken to determine a diagnosis and if oxygen therapy is required.
..........................."
Bear in mind that only a medical professional can really advise and assess you properly, if you are concerned check with your doctor or respiratory nurse. Also check with the BLF helpline for further advice and guidance on this.
Best wishes

Hi Music
When I was first diagnosed I was a heavy smoker and had an allergic reaction to preserved wood dust. I had oxygen SATS of 91 .... and believe me ... I felt absolutely crippled with breathlessness.... ghastly.
If your oxygen SATS are low ... you will know because you will feel absolutely s**t.
I haven't bothered with an oxymeter .... If I'm not breathless then my SATS are fine, if Im a bit breathless then maybe lower, never experienced anything like the 90% feeling since

Hi Music, I am not a medical professional. My oxygen experience has been a slow decrease to its present level which is 92 - 94 at rest. On exertion it has been as low as 86, albeit briefly ! I was advised by my respiratory clinic that a drop of 4% from normal on exertion would mean oxygen therapy would be required. I am what is known as a retainer, which means a build up of carbon dioxide in my blood is an unwelcome possibility. It is for this reason that my blood gasses are regularly checked.
Further than that I can only suggest a call to the BLF helpline 03000 030 555.
