HM Revenue & Customs

HM Revenue & Customs

I am so angry this afternoon.

My son came home for a couple of days and brought with him his mail which arrived this morning.

The mail included a letter from HM Revenue & Customs demanding £8,000 plus on account of his projected earnings!!!!!!!!!!

He was fined recently for submitting his Tax Return late. He appealed, against the fine, explaining that he has been undergoing six months of chemotherapy after an operation for cancer (and a further operation to remove something that had been wrongly left inside him). He explained that the chemotherapy (one session every two weeks) left him weak and unable to stay awake for any length of time. He sent, with the appeal, a letter from his Doctor at the hospital and a letter from his GP confirming that the treatment he had received had left him with severe fatigue.

The Revenue decided that was not a good enough reason.

How the hell do they think that he is going to pay £8,000 - plus on account when he has not been working for about six months. If he does not come up with the £8,000 - plus then he may have to apply to be bankrupted. I will pay his £8,000 if necessary but I am bloody jumping about the insensitive treatment of my son.

His father and I have worked all our lives and paid our taxes. My son has worked hard, since leaving university, and has paid his taxes. Surprisingly enough, he did not want to have bowel cancer, an operation to remove part of his bowel, a further operation to remove something which had been inadvertently left inside him, six months chemotherapy and an op to join up his bowel again.

How can this Government be so bloody insensitive. It's beyond belief.

Sorry guys!!! My rant is over.

I'm supposed to be going out tonight to a friends and because of my tantrum about The Revenue I have puffy eyes - I'll look an absolute picture (not).

Love and hugs to everyone (except The Revenue)

  • This is an absoloute disgrace Rant away Annec if it helps. How the hell people can be so insensitive is totally beyond me As if you have'nt all had enough to cope with Your poor son must be worried sick and furious Is there an opportunity to appeal at all

Take good care of yourself sweetheart, and if you go out tonight try to relax if you can as this could set you back

  • Hello Julie

I think having a rant did help me.

I had a great time last night and today has been nice (although a bit too hot for me).

It has been so hot that I decided a kaftan would be a good idea - something really loose. I've ordered two online so, no doubt, when they arrive the sunny weather will disappear and summer will be over!

Thank you for your lovely message.

  • I would be ranting too in those circumstances - words fail really. Haven't got any advice on the tax issue but for you, go out this evening, maybe pick your friends' brains but more importantly try and enjoy yourself. There's nothing you can do about it until Monday so worrying won't change the situation. Take care :) xxx

  • Hi Scrobbitty

Unfortunately, words didn't fail me yesterday (I was quite rude).

I did go out last night to Falmouth and had a lovely time.

  • What I would really like to say about this would be removed by the mods immediately. Downright disgraceful, I hope you don't give up without a fight. Libby

  • Hello LIbby

I have to admit that I wasn't too polite when I voiced my opinion.

I expect that it will be OK in the end.

  • Try talking to Macmillan CAB - they may be able to help. Macmillan has been funding some CABs (Citizens Advice Bureux), so if you contact Macmillan they will probalby be able to point you in the right direction. Good luck - and try to enjoy this evening !

  • Hello Gill

I've been trying to get David to ring the Macmillan service since he was first diagnosed last September but he reckoned he would sort everything out himself. I have to say that so far he has managed without ringing Macmillan. Maybe this time he has come up against a 'brick wall' - he's going to try to sort things out tomorrow.

  • Oh so sorry your son is having to go through this, its just awful Annec,

I hope, somehow this situation can be resolved.

    Best wishes BC x

  • Hello BC

    Thank you for your message.

David's going to get on the phone tomorrow and try to sort it out.

We decided not to think about it too much after my initial tantrum and we have had a nice weekend (although it has been a bit too hot for me).

I went to Falmouth yesterday and had a lovely cool evening - it was cool because Annie's flat is across the road from the river (I have to admit that I'm not sure if it is a river - it's near Falmouth Harbour). David went to a barbecue in Helston and then sent the night in Coverack with friends (their house is a few hundred yard from a cliff and it overlooks some water - I'm not too sure what that water is either - I think I may have have a look in an atlas).

    Anyway, that you again BC.

  • Hello again BC

I had a look on Google and my friend's flat in Falmouth overlooks Carrick Roads (a stretch of water between the Penryn River and Falmouth Harbour).

Coverack on The Lizard overlooks the Channel.

My goodness, this site is enlarging my knowledge of waterways!!

  • If it's any consolation, they keep sending me letters to in regard to my late husband and he's been dead for 5 years! Receiving one such missive, I took the Urn with his ashes, a copy of the death certificate and went to Centre 1, tax office, and requested they employ a translator - or in this case a clairvoyant - to enable a full and frank discourse with my late hubby!

Did this action stop their frequent correspondence! NO!!! But I now bin all letters from HM addressed to Mr ****** (deceased).

These civil servants hid behind a mask of anonymity, and rules which require the devious skills of a politician and lawyer.

Try and relax and enjoy your evening. Your son has faced the battle with cancer and won, I'm sure his tax problem is a walk in the park in comparison.

  • Hello Sandra

How awful! It must be so upsetting to receive letters in respect of, or addressed to, your husband who died.

I don't doubt that they put it down to a 'computer error' but someone has to programme and update the bloody thing. I don't understand why they cannot just admit that they have made an error (everyone makes mistakes now and again).

I got back home about midnight, last night!!!!!!!!!!!!! We had a lovely Chinese takeaway and a great gossip and that was without one drop of alcohol passing our lips.

    Take care of yourself.

    Love and hugs

  • My previous response has disappeared so best not repeat it.

Nonetheless it is an absolute disgrace - inexcusable.

    Chris

  • Hi Chris

I am just soooooooooooooooooo angry. My husband, Peter, served in the RN for 26 years, went to fight in the Country's bloody wars, ran around the Country looking for working helicopters to take down to the Falklands, paid his taxes and toed the line and I too worked (doing farm work to fit in with school times) and paid my taxes and whatever else the Government wanted. I sometimes wonder what the point is. I am so sorry that I'm going a bit over the top.

I'm sure that some of the people who work for HMRC have had problems which are similar to mine.

I would have loved to see your 'disappeared' response.

    Lots of love and hugs

  • How terrible, I am lost for words.

Thank goodness he's got a lovely mum who is also in the position to help out if it goes that far, but it is dreadfully inhumane.

Nowheeze, the same applies to what you described, how appalling.

  • Dreadful story Pepsi and so sorry to hear in the circumstance of your sons condition.

Take a step back and deep breath if you can. I have have had many dealings with HMRC and the vast majority of their demands are computer generated and depending on their work cycle, information submitted can take up to 12 weeks to be reflected in their records. Phone them first and try to be patient as you may have to wait 15-20 minutes ( you will need your son in room to confirm identity ) and take it from there.

In parallel contact your MP, not sure where you live, but mine is excellent but contrary to the "silly papers" they have a heavy workload, and request help. You might be surprised. Very best wishes .....Adrian

  • Hello Adrian

I'm not going to do anything - my boy will be doing it on his own. It's just that I think it's so unfair. It's as though the two operations he had for his cancer and the 6 months of chemotherapy don't count according to HMRC.

I'm sorry for my rant but I'd still like to meet the person who decided that cancer and the associated treatment is neither here nor there - I would soooooooooo like to put him/her right.

Isn't it amazing that you will fight to the death for your children.

I'll suggest that David contact his MP (I live in Cornwall) but no doubt David will do what he thinks is right.

    Thank you for your message.

  • That's absolutely disgusting Annec,I feel for the both of you,is there no empathy left?

How lucky your son is,to have a wonderful caring Mum.

I can't really offer any advice, except to say, that a friend of mine, had a long term problem with the taxation office,& there life was getting to be a real misery,in desperation she went to the press, low & behold, everything was resolved very quickly!!

She's only sorry she didint do it earlier!

Life hasn't been so kind to you or your son,& you both deserve better than that,

    Love & hugs Wendells xxx

  • Hello Wendells

Thank you for your message. As I said to Lynne (above) it really is none of my business but ................! I get so angry sometimes.

My son is now over 40 years of age so it's down to him. I sometimes wonder if we ever give up worrying about our children.

  • I am self employed and make payments on account, but there is a facility to be able to waive them if projected earnings are expected to fall, so it's a bit curious really. I think he needs to speak with them again.

    Lynne xx

  • Hi Lynne

I know it's really none of my business really but I just got a tad heated over the injustice of it!!! I've calmed down a bit now. I'll just have to bit the bullet and let David sort it out.

Thank you for your message - I really appreciate it hun.

  • Faceless bureaucrats are a nightmare. I leave all my tax affairs with my accountant. Good Luck on a speedy resolve :) Judy x

  • Hi Judy

David does have an accountant and a company which manages his 'limited' status (don't ask me, I don't understand it - it was a necessity for the last contract he had that he become 'limited). He's going to get on the phone tomorrow to try to sort things out. He's happy (well, sort of) to pay his taxes but £8,000 in advance is a bit steep.

Thank you for your message Judy - much appreciated.
