I think it depends how long you are on it Keith. I had 3 short courses of 6 days each time to combat a particularly difficult chest infection. They helped a lot and I had no side effects.

If you are on them long term, that seems o be when the nastier side effects can happen. I am now on inhaled steroids (seretide500) and these do not have the same high risk of side effects.

If you are concerned, the BLF might be able to help on 03000 030 555.

Hi Keith, what Lynne said is spot on.I didn't get any side effects, till I got upped to 25 mg.& then up to 50 mg,when had an exacerbation. Then experienced being on that 'high' not being able to sleep,& somewhat red in the face.(would have made a good santas wife lol!)

I no longer take it at all now,as my specialist decided it wasn't making much difference to me,the last time I was on it,approx.15 months ago.I do take inhaled steroids though, which suit me fine.Symbicort, spiriva,& onbrez. The latter, being a god send!

Please don't worry about 5mg.dose,thas fine,& maybe just enough to get you through your infection. Good luck,

Cheers Wendells

My husband was prescribed a course of 5 days for the first time about 3 years ago and we have found that he needs them each time he has an exacerbation together with antibiotics. He has not had any side effects to speak of other than being very hungry! He has to take 30mg (6x 5mg tabs) when he takes them. Each person is different so just take them with care. Good Luck TAD xx

Hi, I usually have a week at a time, usually 6 a day, or sometimes a longer course which is 6 a day for 6 days, 5 a day for 5 days, 4 a day for 4 days, and so on. Only side effects ever seem to be not being able to sleep for a couple or three night after the first couple of days and gnawing pains in the front of my thighs for a couple of nights. It can be scary looking at possible side effects of drugs but best to know just in case I suppose! Libby

Thank you every one for your responses. Love this site.:)

I am on Spiriva and seretide 250/25. But just recently got a lung infection and had two five day courses of antibiotics.

My breathing never returned to its "normal for me" state.

So this must be to help combat the infection. Thanks again every one. :) Take care.

Hiya Keith, I have to take steroids quite regularly. I avoided looking at the destruction leaflet, figuring that if I were to have a bad reaction to taking them or stopping I would know pretty quickly and take advice from the G.P. On balance, taking them allows me to live my life better so for me, it's a no brainer. :) xx

I'm on a permanent maintenance dose of 20mgs. Per day. Keeps me breathing, side effects a bit uncomfortable sometimes but worth it to remain alive.

Hi Keith, regularly been on them, and the only side effect was to exacerbate my insomnia.

I have a pain medication, and the 'get out of jail' clause played by the manufacturing company of that drug stated "may cause death". Please, although it is good to read these information leaflets, remember your doctor wouldn't script you for something if it would cause you harm. However, should you have any side-effects, please remember to tell your medical team.

Take care :)

Hi Keith49

First lesson. Never read the leaflet. I had one lot of pills that said "This product may cause death" As for the prednisolone, I have never had a problem with it over about five years.

Good luck, Bobby

Reading the drug information is often quite scary but necessary. Drug companies must tell the user of all possible side effects, no matter how rare they may be. Think about the legal implications if they chose not too!

Anyway, I have had to take Prednisolone 5mgx6 over 7 days , 6 times since November.

I was worried about taking them also as a lady on my PR course told me horror stories

about her side effects, but I have been fine, really no problem and I felt much better through doing so. It seems that a small number of people DO react to steroids AND other medication , but the vast majority do not.

It is only when you take large doses for long continuous periods that problems may occur.

Hope you feel better soon ......Adrian

Thanks once again you wonderful people, I probably will continue to read the information leaflets, but take the advise of my fellow COPD'ers. Gee some of you are taking 6 x 5mg a day, and I'm worried about 5mg. Pfft. Keith :)

I have been on this for some time. Over the last few years I have been getting bronchitis quite often.

Doctor put me on 5mg X 2 X 3 times a day. Then down to 2 X 2 times a day. Then 2 X 1 time a day. I have also had pneumonia 5 times in 2.5 yrs.

After long spells on the Prednisone I have problems breathing, cannot sleep, swelling legs and feet, high sugar, tired eyes. And feeling ill in general.

My mussels have shrunk and my legs get tired. I was normally quite strong and well built. Have lost all interest in Sex. I am now 74. I live in Thailand and am in and out of hospital so often.

My advice to anyone is to try not go on this very bad side affect drug.

I was prescribed Prednisolone 5mg for Asthma ( 20mg maintenance - 40mg ) over 4 years ago....and despite constantly being told that is too high a dose I can't reduce below 20mg or wean off them!! I have put on 3st 7lbs weight, both Achilles' tendons have ruptured, cataracts removed from both eyes and now fractured vertebrae and other bone thinning !! It is a nightmare balancing the Benefit with the bad side effects....all I can say is I am still breathing!
