Have had a bad time with reflux the last few days, I know a lot of food I should avoid but I am not sure what foods I can eat to help with it.

When I start having a bad time of it Polly, I tend to eat high fibre stuff and low fat (yes, me eating low fat!) for a while and gently go back to my usual diet when it has cleared. I do actually eat quite healthily normally, despite the chocolate addiction. :) xx

Sorry to hear this polly, but I'm afraid I've never suffered this affliction. I'm sure someone will be along shortly to help. However I do remember reading that red licorice and jelly beans are safe to eat when you suffer reflux. Bananas, apples, goat and feta cheeses, and a range of veg, but I do apologise, I forget them now. Hope someone comes along soon to help you in more depth. :)

I am wondering if you have consulted your GP. It could be that you need tests and medication for it. I am not making a diagnosis but that sort of thing can be allied to your lungs.

I dont know why, but perhaps someone can explain to me.

Sorry to hear your suffering with reflux, apart from everything else i have wrong, but i ended up with a slipped hiatus hernia caused by coughing, hence ended up with acid reflux, worse when lying down, like scrobbs said consult your gp, in the mean time, and I'm nor saying i know your condition, but a teaspoon of bicarb can help if! it is acid reflux,

hope this helps but pls don't quote me I'm no doctor just know what works for me.

Hi DD,

I have an umbilical hernia through violent coughing, making my navel swollen and protruding.

But I also suspect a hiatus problem as I get bad ‘bloating’ problems which (I believe) puts pressure on my diaphragm making it hard to breath.

I was wondering what symptoms you got from your slipped hiatus, what can they do for it, and if it caused bloating?

I have mentioned it to my GP, but not a lot of interest, and don’t want to push it with her if it is something that I just have to put up with.

Kind regards,

Brian.

Hi Brian yes i do get bloating which in turn can make it hard to breathe, my GP has put me on lansoprazole for the acid reflux it works most of the time, but i have to be careful with food and fizzy drinks, there is an operation but from what I've see, its quite drastic,so I've not gone much further.

Many thanks, DD.

It sounds like we're both getting the same problems, and that info is most helpful. I'm 73 next week so I am of the same opinion with regard to operations, best just to watch the food and keep taking the tablets !

Thanks again for your help.

Brian.

My Dr prescribed Metoclopramide, it,s a anti sickness drug that empties the tum quickly, I take it before my evening meal & I,m not supposed to eat anything after that :( I also take Gaviscon but as it interferes with some of my other meds I don't take it as often as I should,

As others have said, have a word with GP, but milk or a warm not hot drink of Chocolate before bed can help as well,

If this works for you Karen, then great - we're all different.

But chocolate contains theobromin a chemical which relaxes the LES (lower oesophagal spinster at top of stomach) and so allows more stuff to reflux into your gullet.

This is sadly why chocolate is on the list of things not to eat.

My GP prescribed Omeprazole. It certainly keeps it at bay. I take 2 a day. I've found that sine being on them I can eat pretty much what I like. Having said that, taking even more medication can't be a good thing. I can't help on what's good to eat. (I believe they also help protect my stomach from the arthritis medication.)

I take Lanzaprazole each day but I still go through phases of reflux when I also take Gaviscon after each meal. I was not sure whether to have milk but will try that tonight.

I am going to docs tomorrow so will mention it.

I do have a small hiatus hernia.

polly xx Thank you everyone.

I take omeprazole every so often. OH has to take medication and gaviscon (on prescription) before he goes to bed. Lying down seems to bring it on. We have heightened the head of the bed which helps, good for him and good for me.

That is awful Polly, its so not nice, I don't have it all the time just when I do something silly like I did the last time by eating a cheese bap late at night.

Not sure if this link for the Food hospital will help you in any way:

Hope it does and hope the reflux settles for you soon.

I can tick 2 of the 3 ... No prizes for guessing the one I didn't. :-)

Oh my best friend "Reflux" I know exactly how you must be feeling. Get to your GP see if he/she will prescribe something for you. I was taking Gaviscon for the first 4 weeks on steroids, but it gradually got much worse. Mind you I was eating all the usual ssilly things like biscuits, cake etc!!

I am now taking Lanzaprozole 15mg twice a day and the instant relief is so welcome. didn't realise just how important it is to be careful when on steroids and the effects that reflux (and other things) can have on your already battered body!

Hope you get some relief very soon

Jean :-)

Here's a link polly:

health.com/health/gallery/0...

This has a slide show of good foods but bear in mind that this is very individual.

I take 30mg lanzoprosole twice a day as I have Barretts (precancerous condition in the gullet due to reflux) which Im surprised i haven't seen mentioned here.

I drink lots of herb teas as digestants after meals:

Fennel tea, licorice tea, tea made from slices of fresh ginger root.

Cumin is a very good spice as it alcolizes (sp) the body.

There is lots of info on the web if you google something like "helpful foods for reflux"

Good luck!

Forgot to say that chewing gum helps a lot of people - the saliva is alkaline and washes down about 45% of the reflux. There is an organic one called Chicza which you can get on Amazon. If you google the Chicza website it tells you where else you can get it.

Definitely helps for me but ive only just remembered it myself, just chewing it now and the pain i have is reducing straightaway. x

Just saw on the herbal tea blog that liquorice interacts with steroids.

Would that include inhaled steroids which act more (though not exclusively) locally in the lungs?

You can get de-glycerinated liquorice which is meant to be better if you have a heart condition or blood pressure. Probably best to get advice from GP, dietitian or qualified naturopath about this.

I always feel better taking licorice tea after a meal but bear in mind that this often isnt considered a good idea!
